i did the same thing back in the day with my 1st car, a 70 base bird, 350. i measured what i needed for some brackets & my dad had them made at the machine shop at western electric. i bolted the brackets to the core support so they hung down behind the grills. man that really looked "cool". in fact, a few of my high school buddies wanted to do the same for their cars, unfortunately, there weren't many cars with the type of grill that allowed that, so many just hung them below the bumper, which led to alot of broken & stolen fog lights.

hiding them behind the grill was great for daytime driving where they were barely seen.

Here's mine... numbers matching 400 with automatic and 3.08 open rear end. Factory red/black with a/c(unfortunately). Rear spoiler, Y99 suspension, Ram Air setup added by the previous owner. The car is rust free from CA with all the original metal still. The underneath looks like a 3 year old driver!

This forum taught me that it has the wrong spoilers ends on it(ignorance was bliss). I need to correct that and install the correct '73 valance on it also. Then it's ready to sell so I can look for a non-a/c car.

My 'Bird is (was) an Esprit, except it originally came with the 14" Honeycombs. It was repainted black, but some years later when I sanded it down to paint it the original color was the same as yours. I don't regret any of the mods I've made over the last 20 years, but it's really nice to see a simple, clean Firebird, stock and original.

Thanks guys, I am very impressed with the condition of this car. I was shopping for a Formula, but couldn't pass up this car when I saw the condition. It is as clean and rust free as it looks. I've removed all of the trim and disassembled the front body and have found everything under the trim and inside the fenders as clean and rust free as the outside. I'm amazed. I've seen pictures of other cars this clean and rust free, but to have one of my own is very satisfying.

The only rust on the car is the bottom of the right rear quarter and light rust on the bottom of the driver's door. The trunk and left quarter are rust free, but I haven't gotten the gas tank removed yet to verify the trunk from underneath. Here's some pics of my rust areas and disassembly.

Disassembly: You can see in this pic that several of the wires have repair splices. I've found most of the wiring under the hood to be fairly brittle and worn so it looks like an M&H harness will be in my future.



Some surface rust in the battery area on the rad support. Should be easily blasted off:



Right rear fender inside and out:





And bottom of driver's door:



Other than that, some small dings around the car from 36 years of use but thankfully little rust to repair.

I don't want to hijack this thread with more pics of my work, but I will post up more pics as I progress in another thread.
