Dunno if you can make this out (poor scan, sorry), but the fifth item from the bottom lists option code "T42 HOOD AIR INLET".

This is the original window sticker from Marty Palbykin's 1970 455 Ram Air GTO, which I bought a few months back and recently sold to a good friend of mine.

i see, now, this carb # debate has been through the wringer before.

pete's book, that i have, has a copywrite date of 1989. zazarine's books are 1985 for the 64-70, and 1995 for the 64-72. so that's why i assumed the 1995 edition would have corrections to any prior erroneous info.

when i bought my 70 the owner(not the original one) claimed it was a judge. of course i laughed that off (possibly prematurely) becuase it had no drivetrain and he sold it to me for dirt cheap. it had been through some tough times as well, as i found out once the interior and paint were gone. for example, the passenger side got up close and personal with a very large, and strong, cylindrical object. and the rear u-joint gave up at least once. other people that knew the guy told me, after i bought, how he used to get all 4 wheels off the ground on a regular basis.

it was also missing the hole in the firewall for the ram air cable, so i immediately dismissed the possibility of a judge. then the 455 issue came into play.

if, IF, the 455 was an option on the judge, withOUT ram air, then there could be an extraordinarily remote chance this was one. but im not betting the mortgage on it.

one of these days i'll PHS the vin and find out once and for all. but methinks it was just a std gto automatic. it was an early production one though, at least according to the carpet and speedo head, both of which were august of 69.

I am not so sure what's hard to understand. If, back then, it was believed the 455 was not available on the Judge, what would it matter if the entry mentioned Ram Air or not?

The 455 was available on the Judge. We know that now. And we know, through deductive reasoning (400 Judges all had Ram Air standard, although they were "proper Ram Air engines), that the 455 Judge had Ram Air standard.

Well hello guyz:

I have a '70 455 Ram Air Convertible with 4spd.

- they were built all throughout the model year and ordered early as well. The factory literature (accessories catalog available at all dealers) mentions the Air-Inlet Hood option from the very beginning.

- I found one of the mysterious 7040279 carbs that CARBKING and others swears did not exist. Was it a fake? I questioned it enough (based on CARBKING's post on my CP thread almost 2 years ago) that I didn't purchase it. It was for sale on Ebay about 7 months or so ago and was mounted on a totally rebuilt WA 455 block with #64 heads. The dates did not match on the carb, heads, and block (nowhere close) so I couldn't get a feel based on date codes. The ebay seller claims to have one of these carbs on his car as well. He claims that these are the only two he's ever seen. Is he telling the truth? Who knows. That doesn't even begin to address the even rarer (if they exist) California EE carbs 7040573!!

- Yes Judges were available with 455. There is NO EVIDENCE that the Ram Air came standard on these vehicles. This is where the PHS comes in handy. If there is a seperate charge for the Air-Inlet hood then the DID NOT come standard. If there is no seperate charge then .... well you get the picture! I've never seen a PHS documented 455 Judge so I can't speak from experience.

- I'd love to get a copy of Lloyd's build sheet. I'm working on starting a '70 GTO 455 site and all the info would be helpful.

Well gotta go. Great post.

Phil

P.S. My car is in Customer Rides on this site. Atoll Blue.

here is the exact wording:

...."The Ram Air induction system will not be explained in great length here, as the accompanying illustrations and part numbers suffice. There are, however, a few imporpant aspects that should be mentioned.

The 455 engine was available with the air induction(RPO 601) in 1970. However, the 455 engine was not offered in the Judge."

now it appears, by virtue of his preceding paragraph, that he means a ram air 455. however, if that was the case, why didnt it specify "ram air 455" as opposed to just "the 455"?

Stamped too low on the pad and no date code. I would think even a master carb would have had a date stamp and correct pick code. In the '70 assembly manual, carbs were changed from the 278/279/578/579 to the 270/273/570/573 on 7/14/69 (before production of the '70 models began).

Dillion,

When you say "going up" you wouldnt be going to look at the stash of 700 cars for sale not far from Raleigh,NC?

All muscle MOPARS & PONTIACS for the most part.

If you are going that way, PM me please.

That carb is a restamp. The engine was offered to me as well. Look at the "4" and also the lack of any date-code on the carb. Get the engine for a good deal but don't pay for that carb as you would a 273 carb. I've seen only this block with the 279 ... it was purchased from Florida and I turned it down then when I realized the carb we restamped (and this company's reputation - the one in Floriday - is not good when it comes to #'s.)

Good luck with it. It's in Mass I believe.

70ra455,

As you probably know, I am selling many Pontiac parts for the widow of a Pontiac enthusiast who died in an accident. You are right that the engine came from a company in Florida that had an "F" rating from the Florida BBB. Also, the phone numbers are no longer active. Probably moved to another state to set up his operations. Can you tell me is the block a real 1970 HO block? Actually anything you can tell me would be helpful so if I put it back on eBay I can be completely honest. I want to sell for the widow but don't want to jeopardize my 100% eBay feedback. What do you think it is worth as it is with the restamped carb? Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Al Barlow
