Tom V - a set of 1965 GTO or large Pontiac AFB's will work very well on a mild street 389, 400 or 421. Remove the "tripower insurance policy" otherwise known as the hot idle compensator or wing, open up the idle tubes by 0.002 and go play. If your engine is wilder, different vacuum piston springs and/or a mild jetting change may also be required.

I have been building a set of Carter 3443's for use on the power ram, but have to cut new throttle arms, so have shelved this project in lieu of customer units.

The M/T power ram with casting number may be seen here:

http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/MTPowerram.jpg

With your comments about the casting number version being worth more, maybe I should reprice it!!!

I sent Cliff an 800, just like the one I sent to you. It was tempting to put a 1000 in the 800 box with a 800 tag, just to get Cliff's reaction but I didn't. The carb I sent to Cliff is a twin to the one I sent to you. Remanufactured by Carter in the original box. I did nothing to either, except pull them off the shelf and ship them.

When are you coming after your garbage can full of Holley stuff?

Jon.

Shoot my 65 GTO already has one!

With the advent of a less expensive wide band AFR carb tuning is a lot easier to tell what circuit needs adjustment. It's the knowing how to make those adjustments that get the carb experts the knowledge over us normal guys.

Skip - by far the easiest adjustment is the initial selection of the carburetor.

John, that is for sure. But even seeing what an AFR is with some standard jetting/rods are we can guess way wrong. The LM-1 is a pretty neat tool.

Jon, thanks for the response. I'm Eric by the way, not Dave. I was looking for Dave's input as I know he has ran pretty fast on E carbs.

Carbking,
Last time I checked my 800 E'brock AFB got around 16 mpg in city driving. That is with a cam that has 240 @ 050 in a 455, so that is prtetty acceptable with that size cam. Rear axle is 3.08. That is an Imperial gallon, so the mpg figure would be about 14 for a US gallon.
I know your not a fan of the E stuff, but this carb has been great. It looks well made to me & I cannot find fault with it. Other than the n/seat issue you mentioned, do you know of other problems? There's not alot to give problems in an AFB style carb!! I have many original AFBs as well.

Bruce,
My 800 E carb is the AFB [ #1412 ], not the AVS. From pics I have seen, the E'brock AVS is not a true replica of the original Carter AVS. The Carter used discharge tubes in the secodaries, like the TQ. The E'Brock AVS appears to retain the secondary venturiis of the AFB & E'brock added the spring loaded air valve. There was a comparison of both carbs in PHR July 2004 & the article claimed they made basically the same power on the test engine.

Default Jon,

are these late carter AFB's useable? Looking down inside the air horn, they appear to be identical to the old Pontiac AFB's. No air valve on the back like an AVS, just a counterweight. They have PN 9755s on the front.

More E carb info by comparison:

I installed a set of 600 CFM manual choke E carbs on a buddys 409 Biscayne. They worked great right out of the box. The jetting must have been just right as the car never ran so good. He had the stock 409 intake and a mild hyd roller cam. If I recall, primary jetting on these were .095 and he had a 4 spd.

I installed a pair of stock 750 manual choke E carbs with a tunnel ram on my Pontiac. I ran this on two different motors. The solid cam motor (streetable but far more radical than the Chevy), they were pretty close with the 113/107 jets and 71 x 47 metering rods.

However, when installed this set-up on a much more radical roller cam Pontiac motor, with lot’s more duration and overlap, it was not even close. I had to make numerous changes. The jetting had to be increased, the squirter size and step up springs had to be changed. I also increased the needle and seat. After much tweaking they are finally close.

That being said, I’m sure I would have to dial in any carb for my current application.

Robert - we won't use any of the post 1985 AFB's, regardless of whether they say Carter, Federal Mogul, Weber USA, or edelbrock. However, it seems others love them.

Sometime when we are visiting by telephone, remind me to relate you a story about the 9755 carb.

Jon.

Eric,im sure if you bolted on a set of Mopar max wedge AFBs or a set of Pontiac SD Nascar AFBs which were used on the bathtub tunnel ram you would have to do virtually nothing but maybe a rod change for diff weather conditions.JMO,Tom

Tom, I would bet they would still need tweaking. Those carbs were not made for as much cam as I am running. I'm running over .700" lift and a 284 deg @ .050" cam with 106 LS.

Tempest-your buddy stil got the '09? My other obsession beside Pontiacs. Got lots of extra parts too. My next one is going to be a stroker 454 4"stroke, 4.3425 0.030 over bore! '09 heads flow about what my RAIVs do. Give him my email!

He has (1) complete 409 with an Eagle stroker crank (4.0"), 474 ci, correct heads, intake, carbs etc. He also has another set of '09 heads, a block and two cranks. The complete motor has less than 2,000 miles. He bought a Shaffirof 540 instead.......

I'll bet you could get the motor for half what he has in it. I ask him what he wants for it.

Eric.

I run an Offy w/ two 600s on my Model A. I drive it everyday, very nice manners and gets a little more than 15mpg on the highway.

Ran the same kind of Offy also with 2 600s on the Henry J. Very nasty little street car, but still very friendly.

We had a Henry J we were going to put a 409 in in the mid 70s. Partner in the deal got tired of project and sold the body. Cool body for a gasser type car. In fact there was a stroked 409 Henry J for sale in National Dragster a few months ago.
