Since you're in deep enough to change the cam timing, why not just get the 2802 or other cam of your choice and swap it in?

I,too, have budget problems, but I believe I would just go the few extra bucks and get another Voodoo 702 since the engine ran well with it previously and all the carb/ignition settings were set for the 702. Should resolve these problems. Just my 2 cents.

So just need a source for a reliable adjustable vacuum can and spring. Not lucky enough to find a cache of originals. Any sources for "second best options "?

as always thanks. looking at the cam specs 702 vs 2801, damn they look real close, they should run pretty close in my old eyes, or am I missing something???

You MUST look at the Advertised Duration also. All of these things count. These are two VERY different cams.

Don't supose the cam is a tooth off. Just fishing.
Personally saw a honda Quaalude burn holes in the pistons when the t-belt was installed incorrectly

From What I have learned on this forum: 2 cams with the same .050 numbers but different advertised will have different ramp rates. Shorter ramp rates (lower seat timing) are harder on the valve train and faster cylinder filling which leads to higher compression psi which leads to detonation.

.050 numbers were created as a standard to compare cams from different manufacturers. When companies used advertised duration, some used .002, some used .006, etc.
Maybe Summit uses a different standard for advertised duration than Lunati. I think Lunati uses a .006 standard. FWIW, the Voodoo cam has a faster opening ramp. Paul Carter could chime in. He uses a lot of Voodoo cams, and had personal dialog with the designer.

As noted above many different manufacturers choose to rate "advertised duration" at different points.
Generally .006 tappet lift is the most common. Yet the catalog numbers advertised do not tell the whole story. Like cylinder heads, with cam lobes I like to look at the pedigree of a lobe design. Harold Brookshire who designed the Ultradyne and Voodoo lobes was one of the best ever. Mike Jones is another great. http://jonescams.com/hydraulic-flat-tappet/ Some lobes may be lazy, others too aggressive. A great designer is your best crack at just right. |

Maybe Summit uses a different standard for advertised duration than Lunati. I think Lunati uses a .006 standard. This is why I compare @.050 Looking at these numbers they do look similar. Not exact but in the same ball park. Progress has slowed to a crawl. Timing cover on, fuel pump on, water pump on, installed ballencer last night, when bolting pulley to ballencer , noticed a buggered up thread in one of the 4 bolts that hold it on, retapping that tonight. Got all 8 plugs cleaned and installed. Still got ps and alt to mount and oil change. Single dad with 2 kids at home, and run my own business has to come first. Should have it running and a new compression test by weekend. As always thanks. I'm betting the cam advanced (my bad) was the issue!

[QUOTE=TedRamAirII;5651028]I have a 3 key crank sprocket, adv, straight up, and retard. It was in the adv key so I put it straight up.
When checking the timing on the ballencer, it moved bout 4 deg. From 8btdc(before sprocket key change) to 4btdc(after).

ok, drove it last night late without changing initial timing, thought it was at 8btdc but after checking it , it was 4btdc, because I changed the cam timing. set it on 12btdc for next test drive. heck it ran pretty well on 4btdc, must be all the torque, its hard to tell minor tuning improvements by the seat of the pants power meter!!!

Runs ok on 12btdc. No ping. Going to leave at 12 till I can get it real hot and be sure.
Then back to the dist springs. Car isn't any faster or quicker now that I can tell , but it seems to run better or smother than when advanced. Try to get a compression test this weekend. Thanks
