You mentioned the sidewalls Phil. Here's one way to keep them from cracking or weather checking.... Silicone. I use a spray can of Silicone and wipe the sidewalls with it.... outside and inside. Works great and actually cleans the sidewalls too. I've had my BFG TA Radials on the rear of my GTO for well over 3 years and use the Silicone regularly and on the new front BFGS too. Not a sign of weather checking or cracking. And I use it on all the rubber seals for windows, doors, and trunk too. Just like the garage mechanics did for the cars we had back in the 50s thru the 60s when I was a kid.

I won't use any of the tire shine products at all. To me they all look like crap, don't protect anything, and make a hell of a mess. But that's just me.

I tried that. Does not help on Michelins. I have also heard a few wive's tales like Bleche White and Armor-All causes dry-rot, so I stopped using Bleche White and any tire shine. No difference.

I think Michelin figures that their tires don't wear out so they had to come up with a way of selling new ones some how.

The sidewalls are not cracking. The tread is coming off in small chunks!

I just ordered the Michelins ( Defender LTX M/S 265/70R17 115T) from Sam's club and for some reason the total was way less than I expected. With tax and installation four tires cost $815.00. They list for $207.99 each before tax and installation. There is a $70.00 rebate when you buy four tires but I was given a $130.00 instant savings on top of that . I am not arguing about it.

Been looking at their HTS60 for bout $100 each my cost.
The Goodyear Wranglers(48K miles and 12 yrs old) on my 99 K1500 are looking scary...
Only live bout 4-4.5 miles from work and only at 117k miles, but its pretty beat up from logging and the rockers are gone from salt, so not looking for big investment.

In the post I had earlier I was going to buy 4 continentals from Simple tire, but when I went to check out they banged the price up $20 a tire. Off I went again to look for a similar deal and ended up buying from Tire Rack, which I had never done business with before.

Today my four tires arrived with free shipping, total price for 225/60R-16 Continental Tru Contact touring tires was $370.19. I'm not sure if Tire rack has went to free shipping now, on their website they're advertising free shipping.

I have those on both my F150's. Seem to be wearing decent, winter traction has been good. YMMV

It's just a change in the way they're marketing themselves. You're still paying the shipping, they just include it in the price. You notice that you need to input a zip code now before they show you tires and pricing. I live not too far from one of their distribution warehouses and they offer a discount if you pick them up.

I have bought a couple sets of Cooper Cobra 225 70 r14 tires in the last ten years and they have increased 10 bucks per tire in that time.

Through Wally World they are shipped at a cost of $125.61 ea. At least we can know that regardless of your location, Tire Rack gives everyone the same low prices!!

Yeah, they must've negotiated a fixed rate with their shipper.
I used to use them all the time, but their prices don't seem as good as they used to. The last few sets I bought off of Amazon. The most recent set was about $70 per tire cheaper than Tirerack with free shipping.

Correction, I realized that I linked the wrong tire size above. $158.99 is the comparison price through W.Mart for the 255. So 80 bucks difference for a set of 4.

It's a little time consuming, but I perform an on-line ritual when buying tires most of the time. Since I have a changer and balancer, there is no reason for me to go to a brick and mortar store, but I give them a chance if they want to play ball. Tire Rack has the best web site, so I start there. I pick the tires I want for my customer and then shop them to SimpleTire.com, tire-easy.com, Amazon, and sometimes E-bay and WalMart. I don't automatically order from the cheapest vendor. I put some value in the service I have received from Tire Rack over the many years and the quality of their site. But often, they just get blown out by the others by 15-40%. I can't eat that much difference. If they are within 5%-7% of the others, I buy from them. I do have a local Firestone walk-in store that will match ANY internet price for me on Firestone branded tires only. So I use them when I can. From what I have seen in the last year, Amazon must have struck a deal with Cooper Tires on most of their line. Amazon seems to sell Cooper tires at 15-20% less than any of the other sites I mentioned. We have a large walk-in Cooper Tire dealer in the area and I approached them about selling me tires close to internet prices. They wanted to have NOTHING to do with me and 150-200 tires I would likely buy from them each year. So it's clear some of these walk-in stores are fine with being slaughtered by internet pricing.
