wth is the "wheel cap lock set" and do I need that too?



shopping around for rings/caps/lugs but wasn't aware I needed anything else.

If you’re looking at caps for honeycombs there is no locking cap. They just snap in The trim rings snap in also.

I found a local shop with a lug centric balancer, the car goes in on the 9th for a front end alingment and he is going to rebalance the wheels at that time. Right now they were done on a bubble balancer, really looking froward to feeling the difference.

Based on the description, these are just an anti theft thing, says it keeps the clips from retracting so the caps cant be stolen... not required for installation.

Also says "70-81 honeycombs" but HC's werent available after 76.

When balancing these or any wheels, ask if they do dynamic balancing over the basic static balancing. Static only puts weights on the back side of the wheel where dynamic puts weights on the back and the front of the wheel.

But for most these classic wheels, weights on the front lip of the wheel looks bad and can cause corrosion where the weights are, most shops will have tape weights that can be attached from the inside towards the front of the wheel keeping weight off the visible front face of the wheel.

On every car Ive owned from classic to daily driver, the dynamic balance is far better than the basic static balance & shouldnt cost any more. Bubble balancers are better than nothing but also only do a static balance and usually not as accurate as a real wheel balance machine.

Anyone have an idea of how those wheel cap locks mount? Looking at the pic I cant see how they mount or stay in place on the back of the wheel, unless they just press in & are held in by a lip or part of the metal in the back area of the center hole? Dont see any other hardware to mount/secure them.

If youre getting the repro caps at $75-100 for all 4, Im not sure they need an anti theft device, doubt anyone will steal the repro caps at a car show or in your garage. Might be worth asking jegs for more installation info. Also once you get the caps you will see they are somewhat hard to install because the clips are very firm and once installed its takes quite a bit of effort to remove them from the front. Just a heads up to help decide if they are really needed for repro caps on classic cars that are rarely left unattended.

I don’t think he’s going to use them, there’s another guy by me, some prob know him, he’s been selling off his SD collection, he has 2 sets, all restored. W/ nOS rings and caps. He had the car w/ the sunroof in. Barry is selling restorable sets for 800 (4). Not cheap anymore.
I had 4 crappy caps that shoulda been flung in the woods, some guy at Dayton wa happy to get them.
