Tim. Are these the Johnson Short Travel Lifters? Sorry to see this happen to you.

I may be wrong, but think pins usually don't walk out without the lifters being hammered.
Yeah this does suck, sorry to see this bud. .

I should add that these lifters are not from current production. There were purchased around 10 years ago and sat on the shelf and just recently installed.

Paul
The reason I mentioned that was I didn't want to discourage anyone from buying Johnson Hyd Roller lifters because they are an excellent product. Not sure what happened to mine but if it was a manufacturing defect it was from a long time ago.

Tim - can you advise the valve spring pressure open and closed, assuming you have that?

Have you thought about sending that piston to Ross/Butler for eval? A touch of blending still "might" be useable

For one thing the damage is right inline with the wrist pin. This is a high stress area when the piston changes direction. It was hit hard enough that I am unable to rotate the wrist pin with my fingers. I'm sure it could be honed but was it weakened because of the deformation? I don't know and not sure I want to take that chance.

Tim - for your rebuild you might consider Gaterman Products lifters, their p/n GP1008.
This name will be new to the Pontiac crowd, but Bill has been engineering/building lifters for a long time. Hit their website and read the complete FAQ section before purchasing. He provides interesting info. I have two sets in service right now (462 stroker with a Bullet cam and 400 standard with an LSM cam). Both are noise-free and zero performance issues. I like the three supply holes Gaterman incorporates in the lifter body. Just an alternate option to consider. Good luck on the rebuild. |

If the pin is pinched then the ring lands are off kilter also.
Even if the pin hole could be honed your not going to be able to do anything about the ring lands.

I would think Butler Performance would certainly have some clout with Ross. But, I had to order 4 pistons to get one and a L O N G lead time too.

I set these heads up myself so I was pretty sure spring pressures and coil bind were good. I just double checked one intake and one exhaust valve. PAC Beehive Springs, spring pressure were set up per Johnson's recommendations.
Lunati Cam dur @ .050 219/227 lift at .050 .515/.530 Intake seat 190 open 384 coil bind .152 Exhaust seat 190 open 392 coil bind .133

Just coming full circle on this, I exchanged emails with Bill Gaterman yesterday and he confirms there are no Pontiac/Olds GP1008 lifters in the inventory system at the moment (all sold out). Will have some in roughly two months.
Obviously he's not high-volume with these. Harley-Davidson and Chevrolet and Ford will always get first attention I suppose. |

Was looking at that as well. My heads were setup for .593 lift with Johnson ST's 145 on the seat and around 360 open. Pac 1903's.

I got mine through PBM/Erson Cams in Louisville. (800) 588-9608. Contact there was Gary. Paid $430 for each set (plus Michigan sales tax), one year ago.
