My machine shop told me to use a good brand normal oil of the right weight for all the engines they have built for me or for friends, but they are mostly street/light duty strip engines with either stock size cams or very mild lift cam & valve springs... once fully broken in with proper cam break in additives/oil, there is no need to add in anything else, modern oils are fully capable of protecting these types of cams. There is lots of hype about zinc and outdated myths that get blown out of proportion... 99% of cam failures are from crappy metals and machining... or user error on set up and break in procedures, not the oil.

If the lower zinc issue was as big of a problem as some think, myself & others would be wiping cams/lifters on a regular basis and so would every FT cam engine on the road for the last 25+ years.. and there are probably millions of those engines out there still with people that buy the cheapest oil they can find and going beyond suggested change intervals. My Jeep cherokee 4.0 has about the same lift cam as many stock engines of this era... I used the cheapest but good quality oil for 200k+ miles in that, sold it 4 years ago, still see it driving around town today at probably 250-275k.

If adding ridiculous amounts of zddp to your oil makes you sleep better at night, thats your choice, but discrediting or making light of those on here or out there that know a lot about oils or put vids on youtube is pointless, unless of course youre a tribologist or experienced engine builder...

78, it's not just about the cam obviously as there's a lot more going on there. And 17-1800ppm is not ridiculous either.

Ok, so what is it about? Whats a lot going on there that requires that amount of zddp? Im asking for a particular reason or requirement besides you havent been attacked by a shark...

Again, thats more than VR1 has & more than most oils had back in the day around 13-1400ppm that so many people claim the reduction is whats killing cams/lifters. Just curious why you feel that amount is needed.

Can you address any of the other facts I mentioned about modern oil/zddp? Or my personal anecdotal yet based in reality & 30 years of experience points?
