All 74 T/A's got a small tack weld on the upper control arm retaining nut starting somewhere around VIN 110000. It continued into the 75 model year. The is a TSB that states when it started and the reasoning for it. If Rocky is listening he may post it.

Mine may be the first 74 sd with vin 110314. Does someone have a picture because mine did not have the tack welds. The car was all original before disassembly.

The tack welds did not start until early 74. No 73 will have them. It is not an SD thing, it was a Firebird/Camaro thing.

I have the upper control arm TSB here in front of me. It states that all '74 Firebirds assembled after VIN 4N110996 will have the upper control arm nuts tack welded until prevailing torque nuts can be put into production on a normal basis.
A friend of mine has a June 1974 built '74 T/A and the front control arm nuts are welded but the rear are the torque prevailing nuts. Also my brother has a '74 Esprit parts car with the welded control arm shaft nuts. I'll have to to take a look at the cowl tag and see when it was made. FYI, this TSB affected A, G, and F bodies built at Pontiac, Lakewood, Framingham, Fremont, South Gate, Fairfax, Doraville, Oshawa, and Norwood plants so its not just an F-body thing. |

My 74 sd ta was built 10-73 and did not have tack welds. The vin is prior to the vin listed on the TSB. Thanks for the info. I glad I checked with this site before I added them.

That ebay 1974 SD automatic car had a 115k starting bid retracted??????????
typical weird ebay stuff that lowers the credibility of these auction to use as references. 9 days left for someone to hit the buy-it-now button! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ponti...spagenameZWDVW Nice car and even nicer ad but seems a little high for a starting offer price? LOL

Thought I'd resurrect this "forum" with some interesting info submitted to me via PM.......
Just got off the phone with a gentleman who was the second owner of my SD. He lived next door to the man who originally bought it, along with a '73 Formula SD455. Although no longer neighbors, he still keeps in contact with the man and will be seeing him in a couple of weeks. I asked if he wouldn't mind obtaining a phone number so I can find out more info and history on the car; most notably, the sunroof installation.

Hey Larry, its always nice to learn about the car you own especially when the previous owner is willing to sit down and talk. I've called one guy and all he wanted to do is talk about his new found gift "The Lord" and nothing else???????????
Good luck my friend and please do keep us in the loop! Killer car with or without the roof, Brew |
