You could probably hook up a drill to the trans end of the cable and give it a spin...if the speedo works then you know the problem is in the trans.

Well after the fouled plug debacle I decided that since the oil was BLACK and smelled like gas I would change it before we change the flywheel and get it back on the road this weekend. I cut the filter open and found no metal or anything like that but the oil that came as was thin and black as tar. I assume that was from the copious amount of fuel that was dumped in the engine by my brothers genius carb adjustment. Anything else I should check?

Funny story of the day. I had my speedometer rebuilt and reset to zero when I did the dash. I had it matched to the tire height etc so the speedometer was 100% accurate. I tracked it with my cell phone. Night before last I was riding with my wife and I commented to her on how accurate the speedometer was, about 20 seconds later the needle just went dead. The odometer stopped turning and that was that. There is a gauge restoration firm about 35 miles from here that I am taking it to the 13th but it just shows you dont ever brag.

Check out your cable & gears before you go tearing the dash out! 😁

Yeah I uplugged the cable at both ends, it looks good. I had good engagement and nothing was loose. The guys at the gauge shop are super nice, if its something else they will tell me. I dont think they will just rebuild it and leave me to fend for myself. Like I said the cable looks good, How do I tell if its the trans gear?

You could also put the vehicle on jackstands, disconnect the cable from the speedo, and see if the end (inner cable) rotates when you run the car in gear. If it does, your trans gear is fine.

Haven’t gotten around to testing the speedo yet but I drove it by my estimate about 50 miles today and had no problems. Only thing I noticed is when it’s really warmed up sometimes I get some run on when I shut it off. Also when it’s cold (but not choke on) all I have to do is bump the key and it fires up. If I let it get hot it takes a little time to get it started again. Not bad just not as simple as short trip restarting. Is that probably timing? AC blows ice cold but it’s hard to overcome the 200 degree shifter hole in the floor. Hahaha

Refresh my memory on the type of trans?
Drive & driven gears need to match a certain range, if they don't match, the driven gear (plastic) can grind teeth off and it can slip. Pull the speedo gear 'bullet' out of the trans and look at the driven gear, see if it's ground down. You can pull that out easy, just remove the cable and the retainer, and it comes right out. .

Nevermind, I see now, there is only 1 drive gear for the TKO with the GM speedo adapter, and all driven gears are compatible.

So I have been driving the hell out of it and I must say I am very pleased. Even though it only has a front and back seat and it’s like driving a 600hp coke can it’s pretty awesome. My only concern at this point is in cooling, it doesn’t overheat it actually over cools mostly BUT I do experience temperature “creep”. If I idle for an extended period of time it goes up to 200 and lingers around there, I do think it would get higher, don’t know if it would actually overheat but I just don’t have the traffic around here to find out. I think if I optimize my timing it will stop but outside that does anyone have any suggestions?

If the 200 is with the AC on you're doing great. Even if not with AC on, 200 is fine - the question is does it keep going up uncontrollably?

What clutch fan assembly are you using? I recently did the clutch spring repositioning , and it has been good for an average of 8/9 degrees decrease in heavy 90+ degree traffic( 175-178). If the fan/ clutch assembly is inadequate you will creep higher.
My 70 is 600+bhp. 14 initial/34 total @3k. I'm running a 4 core aluminum radiator with stock shroud. Pontiac 19" 7 blade fan, Hayden 2747 clutch with the spring repositioned as mentioned. 160 thermostat, and I have the rear of my heads Td. 25% antifreeze, distilled water with a bottle of water wetter. Thank you for the modified fan clutch. I have a Cold Case radiator, fan shroud, biggest fan that will fit in it (17 inch) and a Hayden severe duty clutch. I dont know if it would actually overheat or not, I just dont want to find out at the worst time.
