Okay, that makes sense! I misread your post thinking yours were older. It wasn't making sense that I didn't have things like that secondary air dam. Then I check the registry and there were two older brewsters that made me think they were yours. I need to learn to read a little better!

There was a maintenance free battery option in 73.
It was UPC code TP1 and it cost 26.00 This was the first battery made by Delco that had no means to add or check water. It had a smooth, flat top. I think it said "Freedom Battery" or something like that. They were discontinued after a two or three years. They didn't last very well. |

Thanks again guys! I think I'm going to look for a Delco Green Eye for replacement. In a lot of ways this will work out better and cheaper than the repro route.

Toomanybirds, do you know if it did have the "eye?"

My best recollection is that it did not have the eye.
It was black or dark grey with orange writing. It was taller than the standard battery, that is why there are two holes for the battery hold-down bracket on the radiator support. |

After a little research I found these look to have been first available in 1971. I haven't seen any pictures of them and I couldn't find any "eye" confirmation either. I know the standard 6 cap batteries had the eye from about 1969 up and the later maintenance free had the eye's as well. Anyone else with a memory of these batteries?

This has been discussed before. McCarthy's book is a great resource and reference for Pontiacs, but he is incorrect about this intake. I believe he has acknowledged this error. The 485640 aluminum intake was used on early production 72 455HO engines. The number was changed to 488945 for the rest of the 72 HO production. I have seen a number of these on cars, and for sale, and I have one in my parts stash. I have seen nothing to suggest that an aluminum intake was ever planned or used on the SD455 engine. However, the 72 intake (either number), will fit and function well on the SD455 engine, and many were substituted by owners looking for a performance boost. This might be a good time to point out the correct numbers for SD455 intakes. McCarthy shows 494405 and 494419 as 73 intakes, and 495107 as the 74 intake. I never seen the 494419 number on an intake, and I believe this number was listed by McCarthy in error. 494419 is listed in the early parts catalog as the part number for the 73 SD intake. For intakes, part numbers weren't the same as the cast numbers. I assume McCarthy took this number from the parts catalog. 494405 is the correct number for the production 73 SD intake. It is usually stamped where the original cast number was ground off. Sometimes the first 4 or 49 are left cast and the remaining number is stamped. This intake will have "LS2" cast on the coolant crossover. 495107 is the correct number fro the 74 SD intake. There are two versions of this intake. The early version is actually a restamped 73 intake, the original cast number is ground off, and 495107 is stamped in it's place. This early intake will have "LS2" on the coolant crossover instead of "LS2X" and will have a 72 cast date, usually "K172." These early 74 intakes are commonly mistaken for 73 intakes because of the cast date. The late version of the 74 SD intake will have 495107 as a cast number (not stamped). It will have "LS2X" cast on the crossover and will have a date cast in 73 or 74. Not listed in McCarthy's book is the early 73 "pre-emission change" intake. This intake was not used on production cars, as they were all built after the March 15 emission system change. The early 73 intake has a cast number of 492745. One of these intakes was listed on ebay a few months ago. I believe this is the same casting as the late 73 intakes, the number was ground off and re-stamped 494405. So, there are four versions of SD455 intakes, all cast iron, none are aluminum. |

Yeah, the seller is well known buyer of TA parts on ebay and has out bid many for items over the last couple years.
Thanks for the write up toomanybirds. Like I said I have never seen one and now I know why! |

The other bit of evidence that says something is funky is that intake isn't designed for the divorced choke. How many divorced choke carbs have we seen out their for the SDs?

if it were non-production or experimental or whatever you want to call it, the casting number would have a "D" to start it off. i think this particular one was pretty much found or determined to be part of the HO production run. I still maintain that there are a couple of "D" developmental intakes floating around other there that were cast in the time frame of the SD engineering work and may have been tested. Tom Nell knows the most about all this. One "D" intake that i have always felt had something to do with the SD program i almost had a shot at buying was more akin to a cross between a traditional dual plane cast intake and a single plane with the appearance of a street dominator. This was around 2002/3. Haven't seen another like it appear on the market.

Gardner Exhaust makes a terrific product! I don't know if he sells the mufflers serperately, but it probably isn't too much more for an entire exhaust system.

If you want to see and hear the Gardner exhaust on a 455HO go here:
http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...433662&page=31 Depending upon the options you want (hangers, flanges, etc.) it runs upwards of $700 for the system. You have to deal directly with them to get the particular price on your car. The SD would probabaly be more with the resonators. |

Yeah, it was more. I can't remember exactly. I think I tried to block the number from my brain, but I think it was something like 1500 complete.

Yeah, that nos 74 sd system sold for 3,500 last July but that was the real deal and you wont see another one. This muffler kills me even though I need it to put on my auto car since the rest of the system is original I just cant pull the trigger for that kind of cash.
How did that Gardner system fit and sound ? I've heard there are not the same as the original but minor details which most wouldnt notice? |
