One of the Speed Shops I worked for in the early 70s (college days) had the same deal in a dragster. When it was on, it was a fast MoFo. When it was off on the tune-up it was not very competitive.

What people do not understand is that the only thing the roots blower does for you is raise the pressure ratio in the engine. The HP typically stays the same as the "benefit" of the staging is consumed by the blower losses so the net effect is zero over just the twin turbo deal. May even be less as you also have the weight of the blower in the deal too.

Anybody got a picture of a twin turbo into a roots diesel? I've seen pictures of a staged twin turbo diesel, but never one that incorporated both methods.

Go to the book store and look at the book "Turbochargers" by Hugh MacInnes. In the book will be a picture of Chase Knight's Golden Gator Dragster that had Turbos blowing into a Roots blower. (Actually Three "small" Turbos blowing into the roots). This was many years ago.

I saw at least THREE set-ups of twin turbos blowing into a Eaton supercharger
at the SEMA show in Vegas a couple of days ago.

Never seen a twin setup but I have Detroit 8V setups with roots and a single here I can take pics of.

We didn't use twin turbos but on the buses we used to have with 6V92 Detroits, we used what was called a bypass blower. The two cycle engine needed a blower to idle, but when it was making power the blower actually got in the way of the turbo so there was a bypass valve installed to let the turbo blow past the roots blower.

Rick Dobbeton had his Nova? at the world of wheels car show in DC when he first completed it. A friend I knew at the time was Doug Hess who ran a twin turbo Monza that went 8.68 at 158 or something close had his Monza at the same world of wheels show. Rick was at his car with his entourage when Doug walked over. Doug looked at Rick's setup and told him it couldn't work and why. Rick got very arrogant until he realized who Doug was, then he took him aside quietly and alone to talk to him about it.

Have you seen Rick Dobberton's latest creation?

I talked to Doug a few times many years ago about his deal. Is he still with the Doppler Weather Radar people Jim? I would like to talk to him again if you had a number. Rick's had a Pontiac J-2000. The Nova was also a cool car and much more street worthy.

I don't have any pictures, but some of the small boats carried on ships in the navy used 12V71s with twin turbos feeding a blower on top.

The top two Google results for "12v71" are youtube videos of marine engines, but youtube is blocked over here, so I can't look at them and see if they are twin turbos.

The Sea Fox I worked on had 6V92 TAs in them. Twin turbocharged aftercooled.

Mark 3 Patrol boats used 8V71 TIs Twin turbocharged intercooled.

Over twenty years ago mind you. lol

Sorry Tom I haven't seen or heard from Doug in years. Since the speed shop we used to frequent in our small town closed up.

The side by side mounted ones.. You could easily make 2 separate intakes because of Pontiacs separate valley pan.. For each bank (RH and LH).. Wouldn’t that run better then mounting a blower on top of another?
