I used to want a Roots style supercharged hot rod and built one about 20 years ago. Then I just got to where I didn't want to see anything out of the hood. After Bill got this ride done, I will have another Roots supercharged ride!!! Nothing, and I mean nothing gets to excitement going like a beautiful blower up in sight! But Bill scores double x10 points with the dual blower set up !

If you want to talk drag racing you can also talk about Bill.
I'm sure that's true Jim,and I'm sure we would also be fine talking about show cars too,it's not that I despise "show cars",it's just not my primary interest in the auto hobby, but I'm not a snob about it,at least not for the most part, unless I get that "vibe" from those I'm discussing the subject with.

That's why I've always included the "concours resto" types in my comments here, they can be as big a bunch of snobs as any group, but not all are that way obviously, but the only way you can decide which is which here on the boards is how they post, and what they write.

Thing is,I'd have given the same "attitude" to anybody who gave greyno3 grief for his post likely,we all have a right to our own opinions here, regardless of how others may feel about them.

Seeing as how this has become more of a thread to display open opinions on Bill's car,I'll share my thoughts.

Now lemme start with the obvious, the dual blower thing was just not that appealing to me,suprise suprise I know,,,I'm far too practical of a person to appreciate that,I'm more of a "form follows function" kinda guy, that is,unless there's a major improvement in function, why change the form,so I had/have a much greater appreciation for the car with the single blower in place, but that's just me.

Other than that the only aspect I dont care for 100% is the color contrast between the exterior body hue and the interior/engine bay/trunk hue,but again that's just me,and folks remember this,I'm a bit color blind so the colors they actually are,and what I'm actually seeing are'nt always 100% the same,so to others that combo might look just fine, but for my taste I generally like darker interiors/contrasts anyhow.

The exterior color choice is cool IMO,no complaints there,I'd have just gone with a different hue for the rest of "contrast" in the car, which is'nt all that big a deal if you ask me.

Another thing I'd have to say I'd do differently,is I dont go for lots of polishing or chrome on my engines or cars,so I'd have left the most of that stuff either natural, satin,or painted finish myself, some "flash" is OK sure, but too much turns me off,and folks, please note this was'nt always the case either,my first car I tried to get as much "polish and chrome" as humanly possible on that car,but I kinda got over that "look",and the "race look" took over my tastes preferences.

Other than that, you get to the little "nit-picking" details, which would really just be silly to get into here.

Overall I feel it's a pretty cool ride, but as it is now,the "vibe" I get is that it just tries to hard to get my attention, and I'm a very fickle dude,I'll just pass up or ignore most anything that tries too hard to get my attention, part of the reason I've never been, and likely never will be married, nothing women hate more than being ignored when they want your attention!

Now that shy quiet chick in the back with the glasses, she'll always have me wondering what she's like...

Same deal with cars for me,I like to explore what others totally ignore.

Kinda why I can spend hours in a wrecking yard,or looking over others projects that are "in progress",while finished "primo" show cars often get a quick glance and maybe a snap or two from the digital camera for "prosperity" and then I move on.

I have a '70 lemans/GTO racecar myself,so obviously I like the body style well enough, and the craftsmanship on Bill's ride is clearly top notch,so overall I'd rate the car a "thumbs up",but I just dont need all the "visual eyecandy" myself, which should be no biggie to others here IMO.

It is his car afterall.
And plenty other folks like it well enough as is,soooooo.

Do I like pro-street cars,sure!
Do I like blowers,sure!
Do I like blown pro street cars, well of course!!!

So there ya'll go,now you have a pretty good idea of what I think about Bill's ride, and I'd say it's clearly not a "stupid" car IMHO,but I would have expected to here it called that at least a few times had I built/owned it,so I would have likely not taken greyno3's comments too personally were I on the recieving end of them, but that's just me.

The more positive attention anything gets, the more negative attention it's gonna get too, just the nature of the beast, that's why I dont really concern myself with drawing others attention much,I just keep a low profile and go about my business as I see fit, with the masses often none the wiser.

My posts here are just getting too long winded (as usual...),so this is it for me on this thread, have at it folks, and keep enjoying whatever it is in this hobby that "floats ya'lls boats",it's all cool in my book.

Bret.

I've heard a few people compare Bill's creation to that of Rick Dobbertin's work (his 1st gen. Nova and his Pontiac J-2000). Bill's creation follows neither form nor function, it's just pure unadulterated in your face excess, to the extreme. Rick's creations, although following great form (craftsmanship top to bottom, front to rear was impeccable, with his J-2000 to this day still not being eclipsed as the "ultimate" Pro Streeter ever built), also lacked function. I've seen both of them driven on the street, but they were very tempermental and never performed as radically as they looked. "Fairway Queens" if you will.

The "Badest of the Bad" in my mind was "Big Red".

This car was a car capable of running over 200 mph for an extended period of time safely. He destroyed the "players" at the Silver State race. This is the road race in the desert.

Your can have "Trailer Queens" "Rairway Queens" etc but I really like the "Kings of the Road" like Big Red. At one time there was a Ford Mustang like Big Red driven by a guy with the initials REV many years ago that was a distance runner too.

Gottlieb was the guys name, wasn't it Tom? '68 Camaro (or was it a '69?). Full zoot tube chassis built for road racing, powered by a BBC. I remember reading an article on that car where he took a reporter for a ride over teh Silver State course. I remember teh reporter being told that if the tachometer ever hit something like 7600 rpm in high gear, that they were doing 220-MPH. The reporter stated he saw teh tach hit 7600 in high gear 3 times.

The car was banned from the Silver State. All the "big money players" with Ferrarri's and the like that were in the unlimited class whined and cried when Gottlieb's average speed was higher than 196 I think...a full 10 miles per hour faster than the next closest car. I think "Big Red" was only allowed to run the Silver State twice before they banned it.

Just like Max Balchowski when he drove old yeller, a car he built & outran Ferraris, Jags, etc in the old days. They tried to ban him. I wonder why they banned that Gottlieb 69 Camaro ? Politics ?

Of course it was politics!! And a few high end advertising agencies. I did some promotional work though a temp service during the year that Big Red got banned. It was an embarassment to the highend latest fad crowd, so it had to go.

There was definately some politics going on as the car was extremely safe. It had all the power it needed to embarrass the rest of the field. Big Red was a 69 Camero, Brian.

Double blown is nothing new. Jerry Magnason did it for years and even sold kits. "Staged" blown has been done on tractor pullers and airplanes for years.

The difference between this car and the Magnason deal is that Jerry needed more power so by adding a second blower beside the first one mounted on a pyramid type intake allowed twice the capacity and twice the power.

This car is for show and many figured that out. One blower is a "cork" for the other blower. No increase in power. More load on the engine and much more heat in the intake so less overall power vs a single blower.

I admire the car for the show car image and most of the "strokes" who would go past the car at a car show are not engine theory people. They go "WOW TWO BLOWERS!"

Most on the PY board are engine knowledgable and look at the double blower deal as "what not to do" to a pontiac engine. Personally I will say again, The car is YOUR CAR do with it what you want. If You are collecting "wood" collect all of the wood you can vs the other guy. Best in show is still the best one out there.

Tom, I've seen the double blower done before where they're mounted in a "V" and dump into a single plenum...just never seen a pair of roots done like Bill's (except for the guy in Australia with the Chevy that inspired Bill).

Tell me more about staged blowers in aircraft!

I told Bill that his method could probably work fairly well if he went to injection and ran 4 injectors in the hat, 4 in the "plenum" between the two blowers, and 8 port injectors in the manifold. This way both blowers would be cooled somewhat, and he could deploy the intercooler under both to cool the charge into the engine. Admittedly, Bill said that was more money than he wanted to spend on the venture.

You know, it's a shame how this thread keeps rising to the top. Someone should at least change the title to something more respectful. Especially since Bill and the thread starter have settled things.

Actually, I got the chance to meet Bill in person at the Timonium show last night, and finally see his car up close. Nice guy. And a lot of great work on that car. Castigating his car only for the dbbl blower set up is just plain silly in my opinion. Yet I have seen exactly that in all sorts of forums. VW, Chevy, Ford, Honda, etc .... One thing is for sure. His car has certainly attracted a lot of attention.
