I also found it interesting that the pump housing casting # is 9796351 and the impeller casting # is 9796352 so my guess would be that the impeller is the original GM part.

I had forgot that you have a different casting number since yours is the short snout. I would imagine yours is still the original impeller since they are only one number different. My pump casting number is 488296 and the impeller is 488297. So I would imagine it is the original impeller as well. I had a brain misfire because I forgot the short snout had a completely different number ending in 351 so it makes since your impeller would end in 352.

I'm looking for a high flow pump for my 301 t/a and 400 81 clone. Found the pump for
$86.00 on the jobber warehouse.also while working out of town i stopped at a Pep Boys and the water pump they had in stock was a cast impeller,but with the shorter smaller vanes than factory pumps.

I did a lot of research on their pump and it seems they make a high quality pump, but none of their adds ever showed the impeller. I finally found some pictures that someone had posted on one of the forums and they use the same cut down version that so many of the aftermarket new pumps do. I have never seen anyone post anything negative about their pumps and they seem to be satisfied with them. The only product that I found that always has a high quality long vane cast iron impeller is the Evans pump, but very pricey at $185 for the pump plus $15 shipping. But I guess you get what you pay for. That is one of the reasons I decided to find an original pump that still had its original impeller.

Resurrecting this old thread one more time. Came across it while doing some water pump research. The question was asked in post #43 what the impeller cast numbers were for the 8-bolt pump and the 11 bolt pump. The 11 bolt pump question was answered for both the 9796351 short pump and the 488296 long pump. I will supply some information for the 8 bolt pump. It appears that there are at least two cast impellers used on the 8 bolt pump. I have a 9772716 pump which I believe is the 64-65 unit and it has a 9773426 or 428 impeller (not sure on the last digit). This pump has M4 cast into it, if that is a date code would be Dec 1964? I have a 9782482 pump which I believe is the 66-68 unit and it has an impeller that looks just like the one on the 9772716 pump. The only number on it is 1352 which could be the last 4 digits of the P/N? This pump only has the P/N and GM3 cast into it no date code. This pump came from a 1967 Firebird 400 engine that I obtained in Feb of 1975, so could be original or possibly a rebuild. The other pump I have is a 9782482 with a date code of B098, so a 1968 pump. This pump has an impeller with P/N 9793124 cast into it. I have another 8 bolt pump that is not a Pontiac casting. It has a diamond cast into it which I think is the Dana logo. This pump has the 9793124 impeller in it. If Dana was building pumps did they purchase impellers from Pontiac? Hope this is helpful to someone.

There are at least two different cast factory assembled impellers for the 8 bolt pumps. The very early ones have abbreviated (short) vanes were used very early in 8 bolt pump production. Def in 194's.
Many of that style 8 bolt pump went through the mass rebuilders in the 60's & 70's & occasionally those early style abbreviated impellers ended up being rebuilt in later cast 8 bolt pump housings..

The 11 bolt Pontiac water pumps used one of at least 4 different style cast impellers.
The first for the "351" casting pumps, second for the "124" and "138" casting pumps.
The "296" casting pumps began to be used in mid '72 production & incorporated a different bearing/seal cartridge.
"296" casting pumps continued with normal length vane impeller up into the late '70's.
When the 301 was introduced for '77 models, the cast impeller changed to one with shorter vanes/less drag, thus
the longer vane earlier '296 pump cast impeller was not needed in the shorter deck 301 or 265 block.
Over the years, have found original cast 301 impellers do come in handy when rebuilding 400 & 455 blocks that have been hard blocked up to the bottom of the freeze plugs.
