I didn't even think to look at the upper ice maker until I read your post My refrigerator has dual ice makers and we always use the bottom one. Sure enough, the upper one was froze up.

I think we have nearly the same fridge. Only the doors stick out past the counter edge, It's also a Frigidaire counter depth, but likely older than yours. 15 years old this year & still going strong. The only issue I have with it is once in a while the ice maker will ball up and sometimes get jammed up with ice. been fighting with that for years & still does it from time to time. just a bad design. We leave the ice maker off until we need more ice. Auto mode is a crap shoot. Been great otherwise.

Yes, the doors have to protrude beyond the countertop edge so the doors can swing.

I just looked up the purchase date for my refrigerator on Lowe's website and found that when I bought it I also got the 5 year extended protection plan. Now, I have to find out if the 5 year plan started after the manufacturers warranty ended or if it was just 5 years from purchase date. If it is from purchase date I am out of luck but if it started when the manufacturers warranty ended then I am still covered. I bought the thing July 4 2014.

I called the 800 number for Lowes and one person tells me the warranty starts at the end of the manufacturers warranty and another tells me it starts the date of purchase. I am going to Lowes tomorrow morning and see what they say.

I ordered custom kitchen cabinets from BLowes. Terrible wood quality and workmanship and on top of that I had tp fight to get my money back. My daughter sends me a BLowes gift card every Christmas and I just grit my teeth.

Let me see if I’m reading this correctly. The same make and model at a big box store as I said I heard, is not the same at an independent dealer. Most people don’t compare model numbers only name. I also heard the serial number is usually one number or letter different. Again don’t know if this is true.

Many times, a box store like Lowes, or Home Depot will get a model number appliance that is exclusive to them. That way, if someone is trying to price shop with the local guy, they can't match exact model numbers. Lowes might say "well that's a different model than ours, that's why the price difference", when in fact, it's practically the same refrigerator, stove, etc.

At one time this was a shell game played by all the big box retailers in CE. I worked for Sanyo for 11 years. The TV's, VCR's. Compact Stereos and A/C were all the same but the model number was changed (a sticker on the back) so that each retailer could counter price matching since the models were different. The same base Model number was used with a "mod code" added to the end for each retailer.

WalMart was the only retailer who received "built to spec" models (Mostly TV's) that were different than the base models. Sanyo would mix and match features to reach a price point for WalMart. They were not lesser quality, just a different mix of features and sometimes a modified remote control.

No, the same make and model is identical no matter where you buy it.

I always compare by make and model - because one digit difference in the model number can make a lot of difference. Never assume that if the model # is close that they are comparable.

Exactly! You can't compare because the Box store fridge will have one letter or number changed or added to the end of the model like -A or -1BL for Lowes. That's how they trick the comparison shopper. And they don't change model numbers each year like cars do. They change appliance model numbers several times a year. If you read a test report on virtually anything in Consumer Reports magazine for example, good luck actually finding the exact model number they tested. Almost impossible. Since even good appliances are lucky to make it 8 years now, it hardly matters anyway. If I can't fix the dead appliance by watching a Youtube video, it gets thrown out. If it's out of warranty, the cost of parts and labor quickly exceeds 50% of a replacement unit. Recently had a 55" flat screen TV die 18 months into a 2 year warranty. The service guy came out and didn't test anything. He had a anti-static plastic bag filled with EVERY circuit board in the TV. Took a pile of screws off the back and replaced every board. He said that's the way they service all the Vizio flat screens. Said the bag with all the boards in it cost them $35.00. If that doesn't fix it, they replace the TV.

As I posted earlier, I must be really lucky. We built our house 15 years ago and all of the appliances that we purchased to put in the new house are still in the house....

This is what I’m saying. They will change a letter or number on the same make and model. Now it’s not the same appliance that you can buy at a small dealers. It’s not the quality product that a person thinks he’s buying.

In many cases, it's the same exact appliance. It may have a different trim piece on it, or maybe an extra shelf in a refrigerator. But mechanically the same.

When I do get another refrigerator it will come from Lowes. My only other choice is Home Depot. Lowes gives me a 10% veterans discount on sale prices while Home Depot will only give the discount on the regular price. There is only one more small store near me that sells refrigerators and guess what lines they push, Samsung and LG. The salesman there said they were no longer going to carry Whirlpools because there were so many problems with them. Go figure!

I got a power ade drink out of the refrigerator this morning and it was warm. The display on the door said 38 degrees but I put a thermometer inside and after 10 minutes it read 51. So, I went to Lowe's and bought a new Whirlpool. I delivered for Sears back in the 70s and early 80s and never ran into appliances as heavy as these were. I have an appliance hand truck and it was all I could do to break the Whirlpool over on it . Then, when I rolled it down the trailer ramp a wheel stuck and I almost lost it. Finally, I was able to get the old one out and the new one in but, I won't do it again. Next time I will have it delivered. The only reason I picked it up today was because the earliest delivery date would have been the 20th of this month.

Even John Deere got on the big box store train. They also reduced the number of dealers.

Texas edition, New England edition, Northland edition....

They all get the same engine, transmission, suspension, etc. Your talking about cosmetics and badges, not the actual working parts of the truck.
