I will be installing the Comp Evolution lifters when I put the engine back together. The lifters come with very detailed instructions. To summarize, clean them with mineral spirits being carful not to remove the grease in the roller and make sure the rollers all turn. After cleaning and prior to installation soak them in break in oil for at least 2 hours. Check the lifter on the base circle and at full lift to insure the oil band is not exposed. The oil band should be at least .050 inside the bore during full travel. Set preload to 3/4 to 1 turn which should be approximately in the middle of the .125 travel.

Geez. Sorry to see. I have gone through 3 HFT cams in my new engine and have given up on the HRT set up. But.........now looking at a roller and seems they may not be any better. What gives?!

Tim - for your rebuild you might consider Gaterman Products lifters, their p/n GP1008.
This name will be new to the Pontiac crowd, but Bill has been engineering/building lifters for a long time. Hit their website and read the complete FAQ section before purchasing. He provides interesting info. I have two sets in service right now (462 stroker with a Bullet cam and 400 standard with an LSM cam). Both are noise-free and zero performance issues. I like the three supply holes Gaterman incorporates in the lifter body. Just an alternate option to consider. Good luck on the rebuild. |

Unless they made a change in the last 3-4 months, they are Morel.

Gaterman does make some of the HR drop in lifters for Howard’s, but those are for LS engines.
Gaterman use to work for Crane, their retro fit HR lifters for a Pontiac are copies of Crane lifters with some oiling improvements, but manufactured in China. I have not seen them in stock for a few years anywhere. |

Just coming full circle on this, I exchanged emails with Bill Gaterman yesterday and he confirms there are no Pontiac/Olds GP1008 lifters in the inventory system at the moment (all sold out). Will have some in roughly two months.
Obviously he's not high-volume with these. Harley-Davidson and Chevrolet and Ford will always get first attention I suppose. |

Schneider Cams had them listed on their site for $599

I got mine through PBM/Erson Cams in Louisville. (800) 588-9608. Contact there was Gary. Paid $430 for each set (plus Michigan sales tax), one year ago.

No
Although most stuff in some shape or form comes from china or has some china in it. Hy Lift Johnson is the go to. If you don't want to spend the coin for that I'd lean towards the Comp evolutions, at least you can change the guts easily and for little cost if you get one that bleeds down inconsistently. |

I've seen many lifters over the years be considered the "go to". But yet we have a new "go to" everytime a new lifter or re-engineered model comes to market.
I'm old enough to remember when there used to be three different HFT "go to' lifters.... They all functioned without issues. |
