Bjoern, you "did right" by that desert girl!
I will say that I would hate to be old enough to know of that car when it was nice and shiny and then see it in its derelict condition as you found it. |

!965 Pontiac Bonneville restoration
I bought this 2 owner car out of North Carolina about 3 or 4 years ago, the second owner had it since 1969 (shown in the b/w photo). He used to tow his boat to the lake with the car...but when I found it advertised it had been standing for many years. He's turned the engine over a few times a year and driven it around the block, but it had been off the road. At some point he's tried to repaint it using rattle can paint...he'd replaced the carpet and headliner too, but everything else was original on the car.
After a few stalled attempt to find someone to work on it I finally found Chris Winston in Mason Ohio, and he specialises in Pontiacs. Now this car was never intended to be a frame off restoration, it was always going to be a driver, something to enjoy at weekends and on road trips across country. The first few photos show the car as found in North Carolina, then being loaded on a trailer to Ohio. It sat for a while until Chris could fit the car in and as you can see the rattle can paint didn't last long. We started by stripping the car of all the bright work, hood, trunk and doors, then came the engine. It was a little smokey, so I sent it out for a rebuild. This meant we could detail the engine bay at the same time the body was being repaired and prepped for paint. I started to collect new bright work, had the bumpers rechromed...and the A/C restored and updated to take the modern gas. We had to find two second hand doors as the bottoms of mine were rotten on the inside, they could have been repaired, but the cost would have been too expensive. Once the body work had been done and in primer it was ready for paint. The original colour was Nightwatch Blue and I was going to keep it the same colour. When I bought the Bonneville the interior was the best thing about the car, it was all original and looked great. But now that the rest of the car has been restored, the original interior looks old and tired, so the last job to do is to fit a new interior...this will happen in the next few months and hopefully be ready for a summer driver. It's taken 4 years of stopping and starting, but we are almost there now. |
