Most of the 1960's looked like the 1950's.

Things really started to change in the 1967/68 time frame.

I grew up then, and it was a cool time period, without all the hustle bustle and overwhelming technology of today.

Things moved slower, people were nicer, and cars and gas were cheaper....

Notice how many cars are left with windows down in that parking lot.
I can remember the time when it was common to reach in someone's car and turn the lights off for them if you noticed them on.

Yes indeed, I remember doing that. Used to happen on hot summer mornings coming to work, when people started their commutes before it got real light. By the time they got to work is was fully light out and one would forget that their lights were on, with no audible warning as there is today...

Where I am moving to they still do. People also leave windows down too. Many do not lock their doors except at night. It is taking me awhile to adjust to that. I often notice keys left in their cars.

It just matters where you live. there are definaely still places like this.

Thanks Steve. I enjoy your pic posts also. That junkyard post and the discussion reminded me when I was a kid, and the junkyard scenes in movies like "Stand By Me"

...all pix are from New Castle Indiana (pop 15-17K)...we have several local historians who have collected thousands of pix as far back as the 1800s...quite a few with automobiles

...many of the pix are shot on the same street, Braod Street...you may recognize the same buildings over the decades/centurys...in the late 1960s thru the 1970s, Broad Street was the cruising capitol of Indiana...no idea how many miles I've driven and how many gallons of gas I have racked up "Cruisin' Broad"...people came from a 50-75 mile radius to cruise here...being a Chrysler town (local Chrysler plant) and all of the other car manufacturers located within a few miles, rare cars have always been common here, they still are compared to other towns

...the steam roller was always a parade favorite in my youth...it belonged to a neighbor and we played on it when we were young (and he wasn't home)

...pix...the accident...my father and I were passing the drug store one afternoon and saw the Ford sticking out the rear of the store...the safe was in the back yard...the store was repaired and a few months later, a white 57 Ford drove thru the same window and went all the way thru the store and was hangiing out the back of the building...store was repaired again and giant steel posts installed in front of the store...no one has driven thru in 50 years

pix #1...Rays Drive inn...I worked there from 1962-1966...hired in as a dishwasher at 25 cents an hour...promoted to a car hop, 35 cents an hour PLUS TIPS !

train pix...it was very popular for the kids in the late 1950s...spent many a happy summer evening at "Kiddie Land" riding the rides...TV was a new thing and we only had 4 channels...TV didn't come on until 4PM and went off at 11PM...the rest of the time, it was just a test pattern
