Here is the place in Oklahoma. American Trim and Upholstery.
http://www.atrim.com/Page111.html That is the page for the exact original trim screws you need with the short shoulders,vs the wider NAPA generic ones. Here is this companys web page for the screws you need. Looks like item number A16997 or A10642.. You will have to scroll down to the bottom of this page to find these..But you will see what I mean by being exactly like the originals.. ![]() http://www.atrim.com/index.html Guys, this is one of those companys everyone should bookmark and/or write the name down in your book of Pontiac/old cars parts sources.. I have found many of times the exact replacement clips, screws etc from these guys.. And you get them cheap. Steve you mentioned Napa sold you 30 of those screws for something like $5.75 or so, look at the screw's on the 1st link I gave you, box of 100 for something just past $6.00... Hope this helps.. |

Got the shaker back today. Assembled all the guts (linkage, wires and the two solenoids that are the same as a 69 Camaro cowl induction hood) and it actually works. 1972 was a weird year. Pontiac got smart and instead of using an entire Rube-Goldberg contraption working off the carburetor with a ton of extra parts, they used the existing turbo 400 kickdown switch and worked the solenoids off of that. That is why every '72 Trans Am, regardless of it being a 4-speed or automatic, has a turbo 400 kickdown switch attached to the gas pedal under the dash.
The only problem was adjusting the metal bracket to allow the switch to operate but not restrict full, wide open throttle. That took about an hour of assembly, test, remove, bend, reassemble, test...lather, rinse, repeat. You know the drill. The switch: ![]() The shaker, installed: ![]() The contraption in action:

So Steve, what are you going to use for a shaker drain hose?

I already emailed Norwood!
:-) I have an original drain hose and plastic nipple but they are for the extra shaker I have for this car (the original one that got the front edge run over during the prior owner's carb fire). Once I finish this car (LOL) I will get that one repaired and repainted. |

NOS three pronged TCS sender unit #6490384
I have a 72 and im getting it back to factory under the hood, but had a lot of the wiring cut off when i bought it. i have the 3 prong sender unit but noticed you have only 2 being used? 1 from the TCS (blue wire) and 2 yellow, is this right? does the bottom middle not get used..Also do you or anyone know where they come from. Looking at the wiring diagrams and other 72's ive seen it 1 seems to come from loom and 1 goes to idle solenoid? although GM book doesn't show them as 2 yellow wires..Thanks,

The 72's used the three-prong sending unit but only had wires running to two of the prongs in the three terminal female connector. I would recommed buying a new engine wiring harness. The two-wired/three-outlet connector on the new harness will connect to the correct two prongs on the sending unit.

Sounds good.. Looks like i'll have to go elsewhere though as PY dont seem to stock any.. Some help needed on which one to get though. Did all 72 formula 400's come with a unitized distributer? also when they say (gauges) does it mean rev counter?

Gauges means it has the tachometer and the oil pressure and water temp gauges versus just the empty round idiot light bezel that was the same size as the speedometer. In 1972 the 455HO Formula came with the unitized distributor as a mandatory option but the T/A came with the points distributor standard, with the unitized distributor as an extra cost option. I dont know about the 400 engine, though, on the Formulas.
Do you have the PHS invoice sheet on your car? It would show the unitized option on it. For harnesses check out these guys: http://www.lectriclimited.com/mainpage.htm |

Good. Then what you need is the harness for the V8 (non-455HO) with gauges and non-unitized distributor. Dont know if your car has a/c or not, so that would be the only other addition.
(The 455HO harness had a different starter wire routing). |

Yep, mine has (had) air con on it and will go back on at a later date. I take it you dont get the wiring loom for the blower motor, resister, senser etc with it and would be a seperate item, you know what i mean.

Got the shaker drain hose nipple from Norwood, installed. I ordered a drain hose but ended up using my original hose after I cleaned it up and it looked fine. So I'll keep the extra hose for my other broken shaker when I fix that one.
![]() The drain hose on power steering-equipped cars routes down behind the pump and goes through the loop made by the metal portion of the power steering pressure hose. ![]() Finally got the ECS Automotive air cleaner decal in the mail today and installed that, too.

Steve, the car looks great and the routing of the drain hose is the same that my 13k mile car had I when purchased it. The original hose looks great and you have to use those parts when possible which helps brings the car to a higher level then after market parts. Whos this Norwood guy though ?
I notice your carb spring isn't yellow like my 73 cars ? I never paid attention to earlier cars but assume thats correct for you car ? |

Surely you jest about Norwood. :-)
But if not, here he is for those that don't know him: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...r.php?u=141593 The spring still has the majority of green paint on it. Anyone have an opinion on the '72 throttle spring color? |
