Yes, agree all in fun, even from the "Head Cricket" (the NOVA/GTO Guy). Have a great racing season and cut the old man a bit of slack this year as he has posted that he might not be racing after he retires from his work company. Let him win one. Tom V.

Don this must be a very exciting time for you and your company DCI Motorsports. As you know, there is a number of DCI Ram Air V engine programs coming together this year and next. This is an exciting time for sure, as many Dream engines are being assembled not only by you, but by other engine builders as well. Also the diversity of the builds should cover the full spectrum of Customers desires, for large ci. N/A Carb, and EFI, to Twin Turbo and 14:71 Blower builds. Lets not forget the simple 428 and 455 warmed over combinations for Pump Gas duty. I for one, AM ALL IN, building my Dream engine, that Pontiac Motor Division did not get an opportunity to offer to the General public, other than over the counter. This is the time for your customers to build that engine that for so many years they read about in magazines and seen pieces of an Ram Air V engine at swap meets, dreaming, WHAT IF........

It sure would be nice if we had some dyno numbers of the above engines. I would like basic numbers on high effort NA pump gas 455s and aftermarket block deals. To be worth it they need to be better all across the board then the E head and High Port variety combos. Lot more expensive to do a RAV with the headers and cam for most of us.
You can get close to 700 with a stock block and well over 800+ with a aftermarket block on pump gas these days. I am near 600HP with iron heads and TRWs. SB got over 900HP on his deal. I hope one of these RAVs break 1000HP on pump gas. |

Dragncar, isn't a great time to be a Pontiac fan and enthusiast. As you stated, we have MANY different Blocks, Forged Cranks and Rods with many different Strokes, and many different Aluminum cylinder Heads, and yes even ported and modified cast iron cylinder heads that flat out perform well. That being said, the value and the worth of factory Ram Air V heads are out of this WORLD, and Someone like Don Johnston at DCI Motorsports is offering an Aluminum version of a Ram Air V head with the latest modern technoiolgy baked right into the castings for a bargain compared to the OEM Ram Air V's. Among other things Don's heads offer a 10 Degree valve angle in the head and the intake runners are raised about 1-1/2 inches from the factory position. They are also a high quality casting, and some people with the DCI heads have found some very impressive intake valve diameters that fit in the head as well as intake port cross section areas that would shock most average Pontiac fans, yet alone the port versions of the head ahd the Flow bench numbers. We don't race flow benches, yet when the air velocity probe shows you have very good air speed and the Cross sectional area that you want, AND FLOW Numbers that show much promise, PEOPLE end BUILDING their Dream DCI RAM AIR V engine the should REALLY SCREAM.
This year will be very exciting for the daring who are building their DCI Ram Air V engines, and exciting for the upcoming customers as they see what the heads can really do. ![]() ![]()

I'd love to open the hood on my 69 and see a mild stockish looking Ram Air V It would be the sh-t! Price be damned I may have to cash in some retirement savings and call DCI.

Something everyone needs to keep in mind and remember. I only just released these a little over a year ago. Yes I have been working on this project way longer than that, but actually getting an engine together and running only happened late last summer. So hopefully this summer we will get to see some numbers from a combo with my heads. My engine that I assembled is only an entry level build. Stock block, 4.185 bore, stock 4.21" stroke, off the shelf rings, pistons, connecting rods, etc. nothing exotic at all. It even has a hydraulic profile roller cam which has pretty soft ramps. If it only makes 650 HP I will be happy. So if one wants to compare my heads to say an Edelbrock head. The engines need to be built the same so that we can compare apples to apples. Another thing we need to keep in mind is that I designed my heads with a very conservative port size. I did this so that they can be used on anything from 300 and up cubic inch engines. All that needs done to make them work on larger engines is to open the ports accordingly for the intended application. In conservative form my heads flow 380 cfm as cast and so far I have witnessed as much as 510 + cfm with a very conservative valve size of 2.3". I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I will not be surprised to see someone get close to 550 cfm with a little bigger valve maybe 2.4". I can remember very well when I first came out with my Tiger heads people saying that there is no way that any Pontiac head can flow 400 cfm as cast. Many of these same people that condemned them are now running them and are some of the fastest normally aspirated Pontiac's in the country . Please just give these a little time to spread their wings. I know that it's hard to sit and watch from the outside. I refer to it as watching paint dry but slower LOL. I honestly do believe that we will see a 1,000 HP pump gas combo with my heads eventually. Once we get a handle on what they like you are going to see some pretty impressive engine combos. I actually made these heads for the street guy's that want to make 800+ HP on pump gas. Not so long ago that would have been unheard of for even a high compression Pontiac race engine. I figured that market is a way better market than the all out race guy's, and obviously I need to sell these to recoup my investment. Which by the way is going to take along time. I do have several customers putting combos together right now and some will be completed this year. Trust me, KNOW ONE wants to see these on the track or dyno more than me KNOW ONE. I have a huge investment in this project and I'm still not done. It still amazes me and I still don't understand how someone can ridicule when they are not willing to stick their necks on the chopping block. I should really be putting my money in a 401K or some other investment, but for some dumb reason I keep torturing myself with a dinosaur that has been extinct for some time now. If everyone is patient my madness and persistence can be their salvation. I like the challenge and live for it, even when the chips are down and everyone is against me. I'm going to make a pretty bold statement and say that my DCI RA5 heads are going to take Pontiac's to a new level on the street and the track. Like Rick stated we don't race flow benches, and I'm not basing my statement on flow numbers alone. There are many other indicators that are pointing towards these heads making killer power and not only from me.
Dragncar, Everything is relative, but I don't need to tell you that. The cost is more for a RA5 set up, but not everyone is going to build a budget engine or for that matter a high end engine either. For the guy's that only want a 600 or less HP street engine or are on a budget. The other heads available are a good choice for them. For the guy's that want something exotic and different and don't mind spending a little more. They will want my RA5 heads. Like Rick stated, my heads are about a 1/3rd to 1/2 the money compared to factory original parts and you still get the RA5 feel and look. Not to mention way better performance from the technology advances I designed into them. Track times and dyno numbers are coming !!!!! DCIRA5TTF !!!!

Hi Don can you give me a piston # also a head gasket you would like me to run.if I can order some of this I can get ready to build my motor a little closer to be ready when you finish my heads up. The block has no water holes in it so we can't go any further without either of them. Thank you very much, Darren

Darren, I am sure Don will have an answer for you on your piston question. I wanted to share that I had of my DCI Ram Air V heads taken over to Diamond Racing Pistons, to have them scan the Combustion Chamber. Chris Uratchko is my engine builder and he took the head over to Diamond Racing. That might be an option for you as well. Best of luck.
Far as your head gasket question, I also have an aluminum Block without any Water holes in the block as of yet. Don is a very sharp engine builder and he does know where we will want to place the water holes as well as were we do not want them in order to get water flow equalization throughout the cooling system. Darren, do you know what Bore size that you are planning on going with?? |

Rick that would help me out tremendously I would be glad to use diamond pistons. would you be kind enough to please help me go in a direction for a piston order I am running a 4.75 stroke Moldex crank with a 6.7 Oliver Rod I know that I may have a little bit a bit different combination and I do not have a bore size yet just an empty blank block. I was hoping maybe to get the block together so when the heads are done I could put it in my the engine in my race car and maybe get some track time I also need a mock up cylinder head to build my headers.. Do you have his loaner cylinder head? I'm afraid to ask Don cause he so busy I don't want to pester him. Also when you find out where your waterholes will be please let me know. I just want to maybe be able to put the block together as much as possible so I am not waiting on Pistons, camshaft machine work after I have my heads finished. I was hoping maybe to get some of the stuff done ahead. Any help would greatly be appreciated for I am in the dark with some of this stuff thank you.

Darren, I forgot to tell you this morning when we talked that your crank is not a Moldex. If you look on the front counter weight it has a part number on it that looks like an Ohio forged number to me. Another thing I wanted to mention as well are the water holes. We may or may not want to put them in depending on how we will be setting the engine up. A dry deck may be better depending on head gasket choice. Keep in mind this is not a cookie cutter engine build and one does not fit all here.

Darren, I noticed that you may have an Ohio Forged Crank. If that is so, you may want somebody Like Shaftech in Ohio, to apply their OMIRCON Finish on your crank once it is refreshened/indexed/ etc. That will help with the loads that the long 4.75" Stroke will put on it. Far as Pistons sizes, it is best to work with a very professional engine builder at the level of build that BOTH you and I are currently doing. Someone Like Don Johnston will insure all of the MANY LITTLE things that an ENGINE like yours and mine will need and are done to it, in order to not only make the horsepower and torque, but it will stay together and actually LAST, so we can enjoy it for years to come. That all being said, BEFORE you order pistons, you would want to know your compression height, your RING PACK, a $200 set or a $1,200 set, (the stack up sizes are very different). Also your Head gasket compressed measured dimension, and your ACTUAL FINISHED block DECK HEIGHT after you nailed the Crank and it's stroke. Also I noticed that you already have your connecting Rods, So you need the wrist pin Dia. to also take into account when designing a CUSTOM Piston. These are just some of the things to consider when WE decide to have a VERY COOL DREAM ENGINE assembled to filfill our dreams, and make it become a reality in OUR lives. Because we just want the FUN, not the headaches. The professional engine builders enjoy the challenge. So it becomes a win/win for both parties.

I have a Ohio 4.75 forging. Shaftech did the Omicron polish and IPN treatment on it. Not sure how much it will help with longevity, but figured it can't hurt.

i didn't look at the crank that close it was in a molded box when i got it thank you for bringing it upon to my attention.I don't want to insult ohio but now with my situation id rather buy a billet one I think it will be a much safer decision for such a long stroke and i think its kind of on the heavy side too.. what do you guys think? any suggestion who's i should buy?

Darren, seeing you are asking, and I am NOT a TRUE RACER, but most Real Racers buy Bryant Billet Cranks. Seeing that you are maybe changing your crank, just an idea, maybe try a 4.60" or 4.65" stroke to help keep the piston in the bore of the pressed in sleeves of the block to help with piston stabilization. Also seeing you are really assessing your options, you said that you have your rods already, if you are really stroking your engine to 4.75", maybe a 6.8" long rod vs the 6.7" that you currently have could help, and depending on the wrist pin diameter may help you or not. This is part of the fun of working with an professional engine builder, who can put together a great recipe to extract out the power and the longevity that customers like you and I want, but may not be aware of all the little options and tricks. I have learned many things about the fun custom options out there and they DO make a DIFFERENCE in the WINNER CIRCLE.

Thank you that's a good idea would a 4 1/2 inch stroke be even a better idea? if I were to change crankshaft size I'd like to go back to my original plan of aluminum rods which would not fit in the 4.75.

Darren, Do yourself a big favor and don't try getting advice from anyone but who you are going to have build your engine. That is a classic mistake that everyone makes and thinks is the best way, but believe me it doesn't work. You need to remember 99% of the guy's giving you advice are only getting their information second hand or from a magazine of which neither is good. When it's all said and done you are the one paying the bill at the end and all of those self proclaimed experts won't even be around when it all goes wrong. Please don't take this the wrong way. I'm only offering this as friendly advice from being in this game for over 35 years. Keep in mind that everything needs to work together with minimal modifications and expensive mistakes.
