Thought I should post something here to just to keep the HO forum current! This picture is not news, as it is in the car and running now, but hey it's a 455 HO and no one has posted anything else lately....

Lookin' GOOD!!!!
Actually,it doesn't get any BETTER,does it? (it's ALL down hill from the first time you spark it up) I can almost smell the paint burning off the exhaust ports on the heads. Nice to see you're doin' it RIGHT with the painted valve covers & intake. It looks so "garden variety-ish",who would ever think that there was 500 foot pounds of torque inside just waiting to MELT the TIRES! Curious to know what you used on the exhaust manifolds? Eastwood,Bill Hirsh,Calyx or VHT? |

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET.....You gotta love that motor!! If my car wasn't an unmolested original survivor I'd love to do a resto on my engine bay.

a friend of mine was building a nice 350 for his 57 chevy(at least it wasn't a camaro).when he was done,he was so happy"it should have about 425 hp and 400 ft lbs torque".i quietly told him my stock 455 had 500 ft lbs torqure and just smiled. i know a guy that thermo coated the inside of the ports,it helped but they still burnt off.coat the inside and powder coat the outside and cross your fingers.

Lloyd, Jeff Peterson comes up from TX every year with his Max Wedge Mopar. Maybe you could caravan with him. I know it is a long pull but we will do our best to make it worth your while. I know the distance well. I went to ASU and had lot's of hours left on the drive by the time I hit TX.
The January issue of MCE is the one that will have the coverage of the race. Jody (threefiddee) and Chris are two of the reasons I can keep doing this Pure Stock stuff. Their enthusiasm makes it all worth while. Jody is one of the truly most modest people I have ever met. But do not let his baby ho fool you. We left a full point + of compression on the table and it only has 3.55 gears to pull that heavy loaded up convert around on. That car goes awfully quick for its combo. Quick enough in fact that I believe a stripped out '68 bird 4spd would be a sure fire low 13 and possible high high 12 car. Will some one out there prove me right? I will lend any experience possible to make that happen. This HO "forum" sure does get me rev'd up. It might be a long winter waiting to go put some runs in and feel all that 455 HO torque in its glory. Mark |

2manyTAs, The manifolds were sandblasted and painted with Eastwood's stinky gooey high temp grey. It sure makes a mess until you get them hot for the first time. But I have used it before and it lasts for several years.
I made a small deviation from stock on the manifolds about 8 years ago. I replaced the stock bolts with stainless fasteners for both mounting to the head and the head pipes. No issues with seizing or rust anymore! |

I would love to change my user name to fofideefi ho
![]() I have learned that I have to be modest when I do not have any BIG guns in the garage. I am really sold on the 455 HO motors of 1971-2 vintage, especially after what I saw Mark's T'A do to a RA 2 car !!! I probably should try and pick one up while they are not through the roof yet. And by the way Mark, it is THREEFIDEE.....you always spell it wrong Maybe it is a sign to change my user name??Jody |

I'll add a pic or two of the HO engine in my Formula just for fun. It doesn't require a sharp eye to pick out the 4910 SD Q-Jet, as well as some incorrect finishes and upgraded fasteners on mine however. As you can see from the pic dates, these were shot over 4 1/2 years ago, sure wish it still looked this nice! For those who don't know, this is a "clone" HO Formula - it's originally a nicely loaded Formula 400. The original, numbers-matching "ZS" coded (CA emissions) 400 engine and M40 are safely stored away in case I ever want to bring the car back to original.

Here is my freshly rebuilt HO engine and recently dynoed to keep the talk going. It was built by Dan Jensen to meet P/S rules. Dyno results from DJ's emails paraphrased:
"Installing just the air cleaner base (open) to help direct the air into the carb, power jumped to 386 and torque stayed the same at 503. We removed the long 2.5" exhaust pipe extensions off the headpipes and replaced them with big 6" pipes (used for engines with aftermarket headers) to simulate a modern X-pipe exhaust system with the best muffler technology. This was our best combination. Power peaked at 393 hp @ 4600 and 514 tq @ 3300! We beat the Desktop Dyno HP predictions by 3 and were only off TQ by 2! Not bad. Then we installed the complete air cleaner (base, lid, and filter inside) to simulate power when installed in the car, fully dressed. The engine still made 385 hp @ 4800 and 512 tq @ 3300! We called it a day after 22 pulls. We made all our runs starting at 3200 rpm, and ended them at 5200. What was really encouraging was the the power was holding on strong at 5200, even though peak was at 4800 on most runs. I'd have to look at all the data, but hp was still in the 380s up there! My engine peaked at 4800 on the dyno too. I shift it at 5500, and I think you will have to as well. To summarize, all our HOs (yours, mine, and Marks) and the SD make similar power (in the 390 range), but the HO makes a little more tq, so your engine is right on target!" Keeping in the spirit of HO HO HO! Nice engines Giles, and Lloyd and thanks for sharing those pix!

Another awesomely detailed 455HO engine - congrats Mike.
DJ is most definitely THE 455HO builder/tuner. Great numbers! My Formula engine - 4.200" bore (467 CID) - made 430 CBHP @ 5100 and 530 CBTQ @ 3000, through the SD Q-Jet, OEM SD exhaust manifolds and 2.25" extension pipes. No air cleaner. But - it wouldn't pass PSD muster as the heads are extensively reworked, 9.98:1 compression, 232/235 @ .050" solid lifter cam, etc. It is a torque monster though, and an absolute BLAST to drive. It chassis dynoed at only 299 CBHP @ 5300 due to the extremely restrictive single transverse muffler exhaust system however. If I EVER get off of my a$$ and install the new 2.5" PYPES transverse system it SHOULD pick up a bunch. Mike - that HO engine is for your T-37, correct?

Lloyd,
Thanks for the compliments as it should be directed for Dan as he is the guru on 455 HO's! It is the original WC for my GT-37, and no work done to heads as that is his goal. Keeping heads as factory as possible, as these heads were not ported beforehand. The car will get the x-pipes when done too! Hope to see you at the races too.

Mike I know your motor well! Mikes motor was built after my first motor which than inspired Dan to do his. Then Mikes came next. Unfortunately mine lost a cam lobe. We went back to mine. With all the latest motors built in the last 3 seasons we learned a bit more. Each spent extensive time on the dyno.
Our new numbers for my latest motor were 403 hp and 530 tq. We really do feel we have reached the end of the rope as far as PS motors go. On intersting item we have found on both the RA IV (2 dyno'd this way) and the HO (2 dyno'd this way) is that the T/A hood scoop on the dyno actually had them gaining power! We are not sure it has translated at the track but interesting none the less. Dan and I dyno conseratively. It is somewhere between SAE Net and Gross. A bit closer to Net. We have pipes on the exhaust, fuel pump, water pump, alternator but unpluged, and air cleaner tested also. The last motor we did was a L79 Corvette 327 we even tried NOS full exhaust, NOS side pipes, performance exhaust, performance side pipes and both size of exhuast manifolds for the L79. We even built adapters to test small manifold with large pipes. We are doing our best to improve the breed as we can. Lloyd I would go to the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drags in Stanton. It is the most amazing thing to see 150+ cars racing under these rules. The Martin FAST race has its draw also. If you have never seen a car pull the front tires on bias ply's and run in the 10's it is amazing. I just personally prefer the fall race at Stanton if I was going to do only one. Mark |

Stanton it'll be, then. May not make it in '08 because I'm already committed to the POCI convention in Spearfish next year, but hopefully I can make the 2009 Stanton event.
Mike and Mark - your posts prompted me to make a quick call to DJ. Dan doesn't know me from Adam, but he has ALWAYS taken the time to chat and answer my questions. Nice guy! Dan's particularly interested in my deal because he has yet to build a '72 HO stocker. It should be interesting. If he can get anywhere close to the '71 HO numbers with the more restrictive 7F6 heads, I'll be happy, LOL! Needless to say, my '72 WM engine is going to Dan as soon as I can free up the cash.

Judge273,
Curious as to the specs on your motor. I will be building mine soon and am debating about keeping it within PS guidelines or going for a little more. I am guessing that Dan used a cam close to the 068. Does the cam used actually have the same low lift of the 068 (0.407) or is it an aftermarket grind (2801)? What about the compression ratio. In the SD vs HO article I thought he mentioned he got the HOs CR to 9.4:1. How did he get that with the 111cc chambers of the 197s? Using the online calculators, it seems the best I can get to is about 8.8 (flat tops, zero deck, slight milling) without milling a bunch off of the heads or going to a domed piston.
