When I was specing and pricing my 74 SD in Nov 73 the one sales man priced the RAM Air hood on the Formula with the SD. Still have the sheet with the info. Also when I was bldg 73 SD the NHRA initially did not know which hood was on the 73 Formula. John Herslow had the fibreglas hood on his SD Formula car initially.

That is a VERY OLD Ad/Listing/Picture
from around the earlier 2000's
6 figure car now

SD Formula's
The open shaker was a better air supply than the Formula R/A Hood
73 and 74 the block-off was removable from the shaker - not molded.
They (PMD power team) knew everyone would remove the block-offs day1 or day2.
I think they used the shaker for more premium power potential on the SD Formula.

You could get a 73 455 (non-SD) Formula with RamAir - factory issue option.
(two scoop F.glass hood)
A number of them are documented. I tried to buy one in the late 80's

I've owned a 74 SD Formula automatic since 1985. In the late 80s, I took it to the Crown Pontiac show the Greensboro POCI put on. The show officials told me I had to put it in the modified class since the Trans Am hood was not original. It was useless trying to argue with them, so I didn't bother showing it.

Mike, some of those guys for judged shows aren't too bright. I've run across a few in my neck of the woods. One show back in 2009 had a factory perfect 22,000 mile 86 GP that a judge said was repainted, redecaled, and no original hoses. It could have been a car I delivered from the factory Canada only days before the show as there wasn't a mark on it. I spoke up for the owner and they tossed the judge out.... he was pissed. The owner, in his 70s, walked away with the show's top trophy.

You have to stick up for what's right when you absolutely know it's right, no matter what some idiot judge thinks.

The first SD Formula i ever saw was a 74 , at POCI Nationals in GSO in 1986.
Wolfgang Feist's car.
Thought it was some kind of half-assed T/A clone .
Even though it was a very very nice quality car, otherwise.

Noticed it had the window sticker displayed - so i started asking questions about the freaky car. And met TheWolf himself.
He was lodging with Bob & Joyce Copley during the convention.

There would have been several at Crown Pontiac Show who would have known your car was legit/rare. But also several who wouldn't have known squat about it.
We had a fair number of oldie/older folks in the club so BigCars and GTO's were the main ingredients overall.
Whoever was doing the show field admissions that day must have been one of the lesser versed oldie/goldies. That was a low duty ranking appointment for members who wanted to help but weren't qualified to judge cars.
They should have called for Boone or Boyles instead of playing know-it-all.

The first time Bill Howell brought a 69 T/A it stirred up a lot of comments from some of those types who never knew they made a T/A in 69.

That chapter was originated by some younger Bird/TA enthusiasts - who were basically pushed out/aside as the club grew.
By the time i joined it was mostly people my parents age and grandparents age.

I was at a judged show in MN many years ago and a GTO owner friend of mine had the rare 1968 GTO with a chrome bumper. The judge insisted it was a clone as NO '68 GTO was ever built without the Endura front bumper.

When the build sheet was produced, the judge was educated....

According to the Accessorizer brochures, cruise control was only available on cars with automatic transmissions. You can look at them for each year at the Old Car Manual Project website. http://oldcarbrochures.org/United%20...iac/index.html However, as has often been said the brochures weren't necessarily gospel.

I proved many "experts" wrong when I verified that my 70 Bonneville was a factory 455HO, 64 heads etc.. , still had the original engine in it.

A buddy of mine had one of those engines out of the same car. He did an engine swap on a '66 GP for a guy and noticed the 455 Bonny just sitting in the yard. He opened the hood, noticed it was an H.O. and told the guy he would do the engine swap for the "junk" 455.

Needless to say, the guy with the '66 GP jumped at the deal but who was the one that really made out?.

Here’s another. Lots more to this car that the factory didn’t do too.

...
... some of those guys for judged shows aren't too bright. I've run across a few in my neck of the woods. ...
I have been to two national shows;
From my first national show, I found the "judging" and even the people at the desks who decided where you had to park to be a MAJOR turn off.
I am sure that many of these people mean well, but it seemed to me like often judges are picked not because of their knowledge of a specific car, but rather their relation to the host club, and willingness.

I understand a small local show, but if it's a national level show come on - people are coming from across the nation or across international boarders to attend;
The judging should be as good as it gets.
If you have a class, you should have at least one expert in that class who knows what he (or she) is talking about - and the people at the registration desk who determine in which group you are to park, had better be on their A-game.

Or how about a distance award given to an attendee who flew in without a car, or trailered their car to the show... rather than drove it in.
I drove to the TA Nat's ages ago, and on the forums it was suggested I should have easily got some recognition for driving so far to attend - nope.
I may attend that show in the future, but there were several big strikes against that show which made me want to never consider it again.

My take away was, if considering a national event, talk to people in charge so that you don't get annoyed or worse when you show up.

ok.. sorry for venting;
Back to your regular scheduled programming

I took my '73 to the Pontiac west coast nationals in Bass lake CA. All the so called "experts" kept arguing with me about the hood. Supposedly one of the experts had a friend with a SD Formula that had a snorkel hood from the factory. A few other experts informed me that I needed to disassemble my original paint survivor car and restore it.. We ended up pulling out of the show early and did some sight seeing..

None documented yet. It wasn't compliant with protocol.
Its even an ultra rarity on any GTO with an Automatic.
Great option though

Have also never documented /ANY\ 69-74 TA with Cruise Control
Not certain if it was even available protocol for the 70-73 Birds at all
