Anyway, I actually know Mike Garfinkel.
I'm (ouch) 38 now but I've been "studying" the hobby for at least the last 20 years. Being from the Chicago area, I still never knew about the 62 SD GP being a re-body - until now. What's original, then? I digress. I bought McCarthy's book back in the late 80s when I was still in college. I saw the name Garfinkel and a mention of a SD car from the Chicago area.
A few years later I want a heavy-duty CAR (not a truck) and really became interested in Chevy cop cars. I go to an auction in Mt. Prospect (suburb) and strike up a conversation with this guy a little older than my dad. That is Mike G. He had fun then, he said, but got out of it because it was just costing more and more money. I have his phone no. somewhere; if I run into him again I will inquire.
About a re-body - it should be avoided if possible, and if not readily disclosed by the seller.

Have you ever heard the phrase "you're known by the company you keep?" I suppose if I contracted a guy to restore my car, and that individual had a record of building at least one fake that people knew about, I'd expect to have people cast a suspicious eye upon me as well.

And since we are known by the company we keep, it is very obvious you were not often in my fathers company. If you had been around him, you would perhaps be something of a gentleman. Tiemann can say whatever he likes about records. He does top-notch work, possibly the best in the world for his genre' of restorations, but his doing a re-body on the Gartzman 62 SD GP, and openly admitting to restamping blocks in an international Pontiac publication (which drew a *****load of ire from the readers, causing him to recant his statement), will always leave me with a skeptical eye for anything coming out of his shop.

The car had the aluminum front end ,plus the lightweight steel bumper, plus the blue buckets and blue interior,plus the plexi windshield.
It had signs [buckled inner fender panel] of being hit in the front at one time.
It came to me with a Certificate of Origin assigned to Union Park Pontiac that matched the VIN.
I am a little tired of hearing all this BS. I spoke to Scott about the restoration and he told me that he used almost everything from the car Randy bought from me, body wise except new aluminum sheet metal that Randy had acquired.
This was a correct car and the proof is now to show it is not. If Misus thinks this is not the Union Park car then he should tell us where it's at and not just that it was in a junkyard in 1964.

Nobody still wants to address the question of how did this car get from a south Philly junkyard in 1964 to Chicago in 1967...or if that's not how it happened...how did the car get refinanced by GMAC in 1964 after it had been wrecked, the engine removed, reposessed and landing in a junkyard.

These cars were nothing special back then like they are today.

Bill Blair claims to have bought the car from Union Park in 1964. After driving up from Arkansas/Alabama to get it, presumably. I haven't spoken to Bill, but my hero, Tom S has.

This assumes a lot about what happened after the car was already repossessed, smashed and engineless.

So........this means the car went from Delaware in 1964, back to Arkansas, then to Florida, then back up to Chicago, all by 1967. That seems like a lot of travel miles for a car was, presumably, worth less than $500 at the time, couldn't race in AF/X by 1964 and wasn't competitive in Modified Production, and constantly broke rings, pinions and transaxles. At what point did the car get a solid rear axle?

But, I'd better not question the inner circle about this. Columbo wouldn't.

It's called word of mouth. We also actually had such a thing as the telephone,newspapers and ads in magazines back then. Garfinkle always had connections back then. How do you think he found Pete Seaton's Swiss Chees Catalina [I bought that from him,too] He had parts I had never seen before,like 1.75 ratio rockers.
I bought my Nascar Carter 3bl and manifold from him.I bought a NOS set of 980 heads from him,too.
These cars went thru many hands in a short time and travelled around quite abit. Yes,we even had trailers back then.
There were numerous, run what you brung, Super Stock meets going on at the time. In 1965,at US30 drag stip in Indiana,I saw some of the cream of the crop,including Mike's Catalina [called the Grey Ghost] and Eddie Shartman driving a Black 62 Chevy.
There was still a demand for these cars,even if they were no longer NHRA legal
