I had my first colonoscopy yesterday, at age 55.
One polyp removed which the doc said looked extremely benign. (sp).

The procedure was really a peice of cake. Much less traumatic than going to the dentist for fillings.
The nurse says "OK, we're going to put you to sleep now" And I feel this prickly sensation going up my forearm. Next thing I know, the nurse is saying "Tom, we're all done. Time to go back to the recovery room."

I knew it was going to be a walk in the park, as soon as I got through the prep solution drinking drudgery. I'm glad I started gushing before I was finished with the one glass every 10 minutes routine. My stomach isn't as big as the average person.

The 10 ounce Magnesium citrate liquid I drank the first night really made me feel bloated. I chased it with grape Wylers that I mixed too strong. Way too sweet.
I was teetering on being sick to my stomach, just thinking about the next time I might have to drink that stuff. Even though it didn't taste too bad and had a little fiz. I think I should have refrigerated it in hindsight. And it took 6.5 hours to cause a bowel movement.
Good thing the lady at the endoscopy dept recommended taking it 24 hours sooner than instructed. That would have been a disaster if I waited till a short while before the gallon of grossness.

The 4-litre stuff I put in the fridge for the first session, but I don't like drinking ice water, so I left it out to be room temperature for the second half.
It was less yucky tasting when it was cold though.

Because of my history of s-l-o-w moving bowels, I started drinking the 'magic gallon' about 4 hours sooner than scheduled. I was starting the second half of it at midnight, rather than 6 a.m. the day of the (11:00) procedure. All I had to to deal with was the extra length of starvation from then until post op, but it worked out great.

Can't wait to have a ham italian and some nice watermelon but I have to wait another week because of the polyp removal.

Good for you for getting it done, and I'm glad all is OK.

Personally, I found that refrigerating the stuff makes the cold sit harder on the belly. But that's me.

The restriction is only for popcorn, raw fruits & veggies that have seeds, and nuts.
I could probably do the watermelon if I carefully picked out every seed.

Ditto, save for my physical was about a month ago.

In addition, I lost 25 pounds since the beginning of the year, now at 180 +/-, the cholesterol levers are good.

On the lighter side....Last week I was deemed cancer free!!!

in 2012 I had bladder cancer, surgery, complications and a abnormal prostate biopsy. (TMI TMI TMI!!!!)

last week the bladder is normal appearing and the psa is back to baseline.

And I'm finally working on cars again.

Be a good patient. Listen to what your doctor sez. Ask questions.

Avoid "Dr Google" (Because even physicians can't interpret online stuff themselves when they are the patient!!! So I stopped looking at the computer late at night early in my disease process...)

Smile. Laugh. Do something for yourself for just a few minutes every day.

And if all else fails.....Get a car with a Muncie and a good Hurst shifter. Try to destroy the clutch on the real bad days. That's what got me through. And as a result of my disease, I can granny shift faster than most guys power shift.

At 49 1/2 years young I had colonoscopy #2 done yesterday. Same procedure as last time which was 4 years ago. During my first scope they found no polyps and told me I had mild diverticulosis and recommended wheat breads and fiber cereals, nuts, fruits, and veggies.

Fast forward to now in which I have eaten "healthier" than I ever did in the past and have become a veritable "rabbit" and have replaced all of my old snacks and whatnot with a healthier equivalent. Now - I was told I have the colon of an 80+ year old man and have severe diverticulosis but no polyps or diverticulitus yet.

I wander what 5 years from now will bring since changing my diet doesn't seem to have helped

On the yearly plan for colonoscopy. Have had my share of "problems". In 2005 had appendix removed and they found tumors. Went back in and took some more tissue from either side of incision. Sent me to a oncologist. Ironically the same one that my dad saw for a short time. I now do a Octreo (SP) scan every 3 year for any other tumors and a Colonoscopy every year.

My dad passed away from a brain tumor that originated from a mole on his neck (melanoma). Could have been successfully treated if caught early enough. I was going every 6 months to a dermatologist but was recently diagnosed with a superficial melanoma. I am now on a 3 month schedule for a while. My coworker was also diagnosed with melanoma a week earlier (we both are the same age and grew up on the east coast of Florida). Both of us had them successfully removed because they were detected very early. I have had all 3 forms of skin cancer and plenty of scars from removal but that is much better than the alternative.

If you are fair skinned and get outdoors a lot please see a dermatologist once or twice a year, cover up, and use sunscreen. I am sure my dad would still be with us if he had.

I believe you Steve... I sometimes think about the old Woody Allen movie "Sleeper" where when they wake him many years into the future they shove cigarettes into his mouth and pour alcohol down him because they found that the old ways of smoking bad and alcohol bad were wrong... LOL
