I have been running the 5.3 in my Lemans for about 2 weeks; yesterday it was getting pretty warm - 89 Celsius.
I think that this was the factory setting; the T-stat is marked 87.* Has anyone run a different (lower) temp and what were the results? The radiator has a slight leak (a drip every 5 seconds) so is being replaced with an aluminum/plastic unit. |

I don't have an engine like yours. However I'd say that's a good temperature for a modern engine with tighter oil clearances and ptw clearance as well. The interesting thing will be to see if that nice air induction system you built is supplying ambient temps, or a reasonably close to it, to the intake. If so I wouldn't change that engine coolant temp setting and you should have the best of both worlds. IMHO

From what Ive seen in other LS threads...those LS engines are supposed to run at or near 200* F...so it seems like you're right there.

I noted today that my GMC with the same engine ran at 205-210°.
I should have taken notice of this earlier. This car has a 4 core radiator that now leaks a bit. Easy enough, take it down to a radiator shop and have it mended - except there are none anymore and the one still around wants a fortune. I ended up buying an aluminum unit from Summit, about $300. The radiator arrived today; installation was complicated by the fact the radiator was a 1/2 inch shorter than the 4 it replaced. After some though I fabbed a pair of wooden blocks to raise the bottom up for proper engagement. These were attached to the rubber isolators by small flat head screws.
Subsequent test showed it held pressure fine. A 7 mile drive home revealed it runs cool - even when confronted with a surprise traffic jam. I will hook up the ASDL port to a Android sender and see what the ECM thinks tomorrow. |

Reader shows about 63 Celsius; not heating up fast enough. I do not know what temp the ECM kicks up to closed loop. I did check the T-stat before reinstalling - functional. I also drilled a few small holes to bleed - perhaps they are an issue?
The day was cold, 30 degrees. |

Did you test the actual opening temperature, or just that the spring had tension? I'd guess that the holes could slow warm up, but eventually it would reach the actual rated temperature? Are the fan(s) staying off?

Yes, I did it the old way in the kitchen with a pot and thermometer - opened as it should at 190°.
I am running a 2000ish Ranger fan clutch and fan - pure mechanical. I did order a stock replacement, will try without the holes. |

I don't believe the small holes in the thermostat are an issue...I've been doing it that way for years and never a problem.

Changed out the T-stat for another stock 2014-18 unit. Also repaired a pinhole exhaust leak. Buttoned it all back up and pedaled home - the stock temp gauge was spiking hard and would drop occasionally - not what I wanted to see. I hooked up the Torque app and it noted the temp was sitting calmly at 200°, calmer than I was.
Further thought noted I used a 1983 temp sender as it has an integral ground. Evidently it doe NOT use the same resistance value as the 1964-77 Pontiac sender. Mnnh. So I ordered a TS6 and connector and will change the harness. The billet adapter will need to be retapped for the 1/2-18 NPT sender. The speedo cable is also twitchy - this damn thing is brand new! I gather they are not lubed from the factory? I tried to pull out the cable portion from the trans end but something is hanging up... |

I removed the old sensor from the adapter. I drilled out the adapter to 0.725" Ø and tapped it to 1/2-14 NPT. Then a old but tested sender was screwed in and then the assembly mounted in the block. Coolant was refilled as was fresh oil and new filter.
I fired it up and raised it on the lift to check for leaks - none. The gauge took a while to budge, the Torque Lite app showed it slowly gaining temp; the gauge seemed to agree with the app. A drive will hopefully confirm this repair. |

Sounds like your temps are under control. Now for the owner/driver adjustment period to modern hotter running temps.

Speedo lubed. Noted my 2016 GMC with the "same" engine has a nice temp/scanner disagree also...
First tank of fuel - 200 miles, 12.9 gallons so 15.2 mpg. All town driving. |

The radiator was down about a 1/4. I need to find how to burp this motor.
I gave it 70% throttle on an onramp - it moves out rather well - easily close to the 440 motor I had in there before. |
