Thanks Roger, yes it's a done deal with Blue Steel, very local outfit. They seemed willing to do everything we wanted. Building will be forest green, with brown doors, white roof, black trim. 3" insulation, flat ceiling, metal installed on all the interior walls and ceiling, 1 foot overhang on sides and gable ends. Interior will be white ceiling and battleship gray walls. 6" slab with 8" sections for future lift, 16 foot apron across the whole back (leading into the rear 10 x 10 door.
Crew did some extra dirt work for us while they were here, smoothed out the front lawns, filled in some gullies in a field, put in a driveway. HinH ... keep us posted, always interested in the process. So yes, I was interested in seeing the shop.Hoping we can get all the grass back in and growing well before winter. We probably need 1000 lbs of Fescue to do all the seeding we'd like to. Might end up getting a tiller for the skidsteer or tractor ... lots of hard ground that needs weeds turned under and smoothing. Couple of videos of day two .... Trusses were manufactured elsewhere ... hard to see in the time lapse but they carried them over one by one.
Post holes get filled with concrete when they pour the slab (hopefully today). Never seen it done that way before. They put enough dirt in the hole to fix the position of the post in the bottom of the hole, then fill up the top few feet of the hole with slab concrete. Not real happy about the bottom of the post being in the dirt, but having the post concrete tied to the slab seems a decent idea. Concrete is 4,000 psi fiber reinforced, overall thickness 6-7", deeper at the edges, door thresholds and lift pad.

There will be rebar in the thresholds of the door openings, and in the lift pad. I don't think there will be any mesh at all. The original spec was 3000 psi concrete with mesh, the concrete "guy" is using 4000 psi fiber reinforced with no mesh. He says that fiber is better as it is homogenous throughout the concrete compared to mesh that sits a couple inches from the bottom .. specially on slabs 6" or more thick.
I suspect that he likes 4000/fiber as it saves the labor of having to put down the mesh, and having to walk around on it etc. Cost wise ... a wash, the 4000 is more expensive, but you save the price of the mesh. I'll be asking to see his receipt from the concrete company showing he actually is using 4000 psi with fiber reinforcement. I've never been a huge fan of mesh, most of the time it get's trampled down to the bottom unless they are very vigilant to continually pull it up while the concrete is being poured. And, after decade or so it's rusted inside the concrete to the point that it's not doing much of anything. I'd love to have a full 2' x 2' rebar grid in the whole thing ... but that would add considerably to the cost. Morbid to think about .. but .. this building has to serve me well for 20 years at most, odds are I'll be worm food by then, or sitting on my porch looking at Lake Como and drinking wine till I fall over every night ![]() I'm undecided about cutting crack reliefs in the surface. I know it's common practice in cold climates, but it doesn't seem to be a thing down here. This really isn't a "Morton Buildings" level of build. If I was 35 years old and had to live with it for 35 more years I'd probably be doing a few things differently.

I'm doing my floor soon 30x60 $$$$. I had planned on heat and mesh and Rebar in certain locations. I had the science of heated floor thought out over 10 yrs. Got books from numbing supply cos. Plans ,etc,insulation. ZURN was a big help,free. Anyway got talking to friends and heating friend. Couple of friends had heated floors. Gave me pros and cons. Decided not to do heat floor just use heaters in ceiling.There
was the economics considered. Remember I was self employed in construction with my father 25 + yrs. The floor is going minimum 4000 psi with fibre. Why?? Here is my thinking. Years ago we had a new basement floor cracking( found out hot load on 2nd round from supplier) so I called Portland cement association. Talked to a nice engineer there. He said 'if you can make the floor smooth on the bottom as the top there will be less chance of cracking' He said think of it as a piece of glass with a mark in it. Makes sense. So I'm using,4000psi, fiber mesh, no rods or steel mesh,no pex tubing and 5 inches thick. Now I'm considering whether to use #67 stone #57 stone. 57 stone here is maximum of 2 " in size with certain % . #67 are smaller approximately 1.5 " why thinking smaller stone more condensed mix the 57s are stronger being bigger stone. After some research it does appear that 4000 with fiber is considered at the least a replacement for wire mesh, and in some cases superior to metal reinforced ... really depends on application.
Pretty sure they used #67 on our base, it all looks like a max of 1". I figure with the plastic vapor barrier on top of it, it will make a pretty smooth underside. The soil here is something to see, pretty high clay content .. it compacts as hard as rock, in fact I think in general in this locality they often pour right on top of compacted soil. You can drive a concrete truck on virgin soil here and it might make a depression about 1.5" deep. I've been driving around the property, both "lawn" and field with my 1/2 ton GMC with an IBC of water in the back over 2000 lbs and it doesn't even leave a mark ... I mean none.

I used the 4000 pound fiber reinforced concrete on the last slab I did about 5 years ago. The ground was compacted and 57 gravel added. Plenty of "control joints." No cracks anywhere. One of the secrets is to keep the concrete damp for an extended period of time. In my case that was for more than 2 weeks.
