Getting hit in the right rear was better (if that's possible) than the left rear because of the gas neck in the left quarter.

That is a '69 Orange Krate. You can tell by the handle bars, rear brake, shifter and rear tire. They were different other years. They were the absolute koolist bikes on planet earth in the late 60s and into the mid 70s before the bmx craze took over. They are heavy but, quite fast, ride nice and, to this day, there is not a better looking bike.!
I wish I had one as a kid but, I have 3 of them now plus a 5 speed delux in blue because Schwinn never made a blue Krate for some reason.

As best I know there were the years and models Schwinn offered Krates. Each year had their own diffences as well. Starting in 1969, a single speed/coaster brake Krate was offered, they are quite rare. In my collection, I have a '72 Pea coaster Krate.

1968- Apple, Lemon, Orange
1969- Apple, Lemon, Orange, Pea
1970- Apple, Lemon, Orange, Pea, Cotton
1971- Apple, Lemon, Orange, Pea, Cotton, Grey
1972- Apple, Lemon, Orange, Pea

...mine had the recall performed on it...the recall consisted of a curved piece of plexiglass being wedged between the gas tank and the frame...

More Krate stuff

Here is a 1968 model. Note some unique things to '68 Krates- one year only. 1. no front fender, 2. round ball shifter, 3. matching color striped rear slick (bike in picture uses a pre production treaded rear tire). 4. It was also the only year with a spring cushion front seat mount.



For 1969, the price went up a bit and some changes were made. 1. the front seat mount was solid, 2, there was a front fender but, it was razor sharp, 3, still had a matching strip rear tire but, was now a treaded cheater slick. 4, '69 only had the shifter handle bent horizontally.

Yours was a Fastback and it was geared more to the sports car type look and feel. It was lighter and handled better, had thinner tires with less rolling resistance, etc.

I've noticed all of the Schwinn advertisements show the shifter in a more "forward" position. Those are the higher gears; If you notice in my pic the shifter is pulled rearward (which is first gear).

I wonder why the ads are shown that way, because I can certainly personally attest that it is difficult to get rolling at low speeds from 3rd, 4th or 5th gear!

Sidebar: I am reminded that I used to ride wheelies on my Krate, at will. Meaning: I could ride down the driveway, all they way around the block, and back up into the garage - all on just the rear wheel....

All these schwinns bring back the memories. I never had a banana seat bike, but I did have a Varsity, and I could ride a wheelie on that ten speed forever. My brother got a cool sears bike one year for Christmas, it was "the rail". See attached pic I found on the web.
