Lloyd is talking about front belts, not rear. The fronts are different for the 74 versus the 73. Let's not confuse the issue.

You could use 75 type but you will need to change the retractor assemblies as well. The whole shootin match if you will!

Thanks, Rick. It's amazing what some TLC and a little tuning will do! Gotta tear the OE carb down and see what is SO f****d up with it.

That buckle doesn't appear correct, unfortunately.

Correct Bob,it has gotten somewhat confusing but in post 1635 a pic of rear seat recepticles from a 74 were posted,Brian and I were refering to how the REAR seat recepticles are the same as a 73's,and as Brian said the 74's from the front as you know are different than the 73's front.
Just clarifiying.

Mucho thanks for trying, Brew.

Question for all: would a complete setup from a '78-'81 'bird be a DIRECT bolt-in deal for my '74? I mean direct bolt-in, with NO MODIFICATIONS to anything.

Thanks in advance.

Lloyd:

Cannot answer for sure but I would say yes! They will not look anywhere near correct though! I believe that the 78 and up style has the sliding male on the shoulder harness and does not have a lower retractor next to the seat.

I could be wrong though! It has been known to happen although I can't remember the last time it did. LOL

Forget the gardner exhaust and go with the PYPEs setup.
Gardner is for showcars and people with showcars, don't obliterate tires.

Yeah, you might want to talk to Bob on this since I believe he has had both systems on his car due to not liking one of them ???????

LOL,
Brew

Lloyd:

I had a lot of trouble with the Gardner system fitting properly back near the pinion flange. It would mock up fine but when you tightened all the clamps in their sequence it would suck the RH pipe right under the pinion. I dicked with it for weeks and was never happy with it. Finally took it off and sold it to a fine gentleman in California for $600.00.

They don't flow worth a darn. I would run the PY system with the Dynomax and just keep on obliterating those tires. Gardners are for trailer queens that never get driven. Brew probably has one on his BG 4 speed car. We know it never gets driven! LOL

Lloyd,

The 2 1/4" crush bent vs 2 1/2" mandrel bent is an honest half a second and 3-4 mph difference on the track.

I think you said the track may be in this car's future as well.

Listen to Father Bob.

I use the Gardner setup. It fit perfect in my '73, but it is definitely more restrictive than less factory setups. However, you'll still have no problems destroying tires with them.

PYPES is a well designed and well built system.

Gardner is an attempt to duplicate the factory system. The bends are flatter and more restrictive than the original pipes. I have also heard of problems with fitting.

Another option would be the RARE system. Talk to Paul, he is great to work with.

I had absolutely no problem whatsoever with the installation of the Gardener system in my 72 455HO. It basically fell into place, with every pipe sliding into each other like it born that way.

(and no I didn't get paid for this comment - I paid full price for my exhaust from them)
