I think there are a few different castings of these repro'd. One version I know of has the casting numbers ledgible on the pass side due to a shift in the mold. Other than someone knowing the numbers cast on the repro's, another way to tell is the originals are extremely thin walled making them very suseptible to cracking. The repro's along with being thicker walled were made of a more mallable steel.

Thanks John and Larry on the adjustment/idler pulley answer! My 1974 SD Trans Am does have AC but not all of those other options so no 80 AMP alternator. This TA did not have the adjustment/idler pulley when I purchased it and everything else looked so original I could not imagine that this pulley would be the only part missing. Also, that SD Trans Am that I sold Lloyd did not have this pulley either.
Now, I have the pulley and you said that the alternator had a different bracket also. Do you have any photos you could post showing the pulley setup and the alternator bracket? I will see if I have the other matching brackets to put the set together.

Youssef, the car looks like its moving right along.
There are a few things that where not on the car when it was dipped. Seat belt bolts, punch caps, and a couple of those cables, but all of them can be touched up later by hand(if needed). Keep the pictures coming, Brew |

Hey Guys, just purchased a 74 trans am 455sd and am begining a rotisserie restoration. I am looking for direction on a proper restoration for originality. Currently I am most concerned about the body and finishes, who can I talk to that can help? Are there any other sources out there?

Ask away! There is a ton of resources right here.
Welcome to PY and the SD Forum thread. What is the color combo of your car? Auto or 4 speed? Pix?

I believe his car is white with the blue interior. The carbs show up from time to time and they are expensive, like 2k or more depending on condition. Sure glad I don't need one for my 4 speed. OUCH!

Thanks guys for all the respones. I have attached a photo of the car when I got it. Now it is in pieces.
One question I have: is the carb date stamped to match the engine or body build date? I understand that the carb is stamped to match the year of vehicle and whether it is automatic or manual. So are there more stampings to match the build date or can I get a carb that is from 1974 with an auto matic trans. One thing the seller told me is that his uncle bought the car and ordered a 1973 455sd t/a with a manual trans at the end of 1973. The dealer came back and said he could not order a manual trans with a 310hp motor. So this car is supposed to be a 310 hp 1974 auto trans car. Could this be possible? How can I tell? Since I am in CA, we can only use certain materials on the car. We have to use water based paint now. Should I try to get around that? Does the entire body get red oxide? Where can I get Engine paint/color? Dash/Interior Color? Trunk color? Is there anything that need to beaware of when repainting the black semi gloss? What should I mask off? Thank you for all the help. Bryan |
