Default 1957 chieftain info

I bought me an old 1957 chieftain 4 door with a straight 6. The car is complete minus the front bumper, and everything is in really good shape for sitting for so many years.

I havent even began to dive in yet,(too many projects). But I was hoping someone could give me some good information/ data on this car as I havent been able to find anything but fotos on the internet.

Well, if it has a straight six there's something unusual going on...all US Pontiacs had V8s in them back then. It's not a Canadian Pontiac, is it?

Stuart is correct. Pontiac did not offer a 6 cylinder engine in ful size models from 1955 through the very late 70s or early 80s. You either have something somebody made up or a canadian model. Most canadian models used different model names, cheaper, smaller brakes, trans, etc, etc like a chev.

Yeah it is a canadian model. I bought it, towed it to my buddies house and left it for this weekend, so I didnt get a chance to get any numbers off of it yet.For $200 , it wasnt a bad deal.

Is is a Pathfinder? They did not have Chieftains in Canada.

For $200.00, it was a steal.

Kerry,

His is not a Chieftain, it is a Canadian model, probably a Pathfinder, which has a Chevy drivetrain and in his case, a 6 cylinder.

I believe that the Canadian Pontiacs around those years had a 261 cubic inch straight six. It was built by Chevrolet and was almost identical to the 261 six used in heavy-duty Chevy trucks in the U.S.
The rest of the drivetrain and chassis was the same as a 57 Chevrolet.

Here's a Canadian Pontiac message board if you havn't found it already that can help where we can't here. Some Tri-5 guys are actually converting the solid 4 doors into 2 doors if you have a good set of doors. Plenty of threads over on the HAMB that show it in detail.

Hi all,

it should be a canadian model , like mine.
itīs a 261 with 3 speed synchromesh tranny .
Thats a good durable engine , almost the same horsepower like the small v8, but cheaper on gas.
