We have this stuff at work like cosmoline. Made by CRC called SP-400. Its corrosion inhibitor and does work. We spray it on shafts, sprockets that come out of the machine shop and stored for future use.
But taking it off is a pain. Use Scotts Brite pads and PB Blaster.
I would no use it on engine parts.

I would disagree. You will
Never see anyone use WD 40 on aircraft that sit . Corrosion X is what the aircraft community and boating use. Or aeroshield by Boeing. On products that move you won’t see Wd 40 either because it pulls in debris.

For items that move I’d use LPS

And let’s not forget how manufacturers stored parts when our Pontiac’s were made - cosmoline !

i have not used cosmoline, just heard it was very effective. like something you would use if you were a prepper and wanted to bury a rifle so you could use it 50 years from now..

i am not a huge fan of hard work so it sounds like removing cosmoline is not for me. thanks for the info!

Liberal coat of LPS 3 for storage. Then bag it and something to keep mice away.

When I was in high school I worked part time at a Datsun dealer and I used to help cleaning the cars that were shipped from Japan by boat. They used cosmoline as a protectorate, especially over the chrome. All the things we tried nothing worked well for cutting it except elbow grease. Fine steel wool and a lot of scrubbing with solvents, but we never ran across anything that really dissolved it.

We tried, diesel/kerosene, gasoline, lacquer thinner, enamel reducer, and some I can't recall off the top of my head, none would cut into it. My father worked at the Datsun dealer also, and he was in Pearl Harbor during the second WW, he had the same trouble when he worked in the motor pool over there getting it off of metal parts.

I would never use it because of the difficulty removing it. It is really difficult to remove once it dries.

As soon as it’s here I’ll be sure to post it in the 70-72 section, comes with full documentation but I purchased the PHS package as well.

Just my $.02 but I stored my fully machined 455 block, heads and crank on-end in 3 separate garbage bags on the garage floor for 2 years. I sprayed the liberally with WD40 on all surfaces, vacuumed the bags and sealed them with zip ties. Not a spec of rest when I was ready to assemble.
