Default Painting leaf springs on 68 Bird?

I've got a new set of Eaton leaf springs and would like to paint them before installing. I could see slight rust forming between the leaves as they've been sitting for a year in storage so I disassembled them. I would like them to be as close as I can get them to the original gray phosphate finish. What kind of paint / primer works well for this? I don't want it to flake off from the flexing.

Thanks
OJ

I've done actual phosphating for lots of the detail parts, but I'm thinking paint is better for the springs. I'm just thinking they will need to be touched up from use and phosphating isn't likely to last all that long once the car is driven. So, this just kind of comes down to the best paint from both a durability and color perspective. I appreciate the info. I'd really like to find someone with firsthand experience that has had good results.
