There are some good pictures of "Y" base in post #48 above. I think there is an "A" stamped on the top front area. You can make it out in the pre-painted picture.

1970 Van Nuys Jacks(the square shafts) were a different shade of blue than the 1970 Norwood(trapizoid shaft) jacks were. The 1971 Jacks(the "y " shaft) were yet another shade of blue. 71 shaft was painted silver while 70 Van Nuys was silver cad and Norwood was gold cad. The lug wrenches that I have and have removed from cars have a "w" or an "m" depending on how you look at it?) on the part of teh wrench where the nut would be gripped. I have seen the lug wrenches grey painted, like a Ford Grey, or(and more commonly) the same blue as the rest of the jack is for that particular year/assembly Plant..

The '71 VN jack would be the same as the '70 VN jack. It is just the supplier that Van Nuys used. I have seen the same jack in Fremont built A-bodies. Below are pictures of the three jacks side by side, the three bases side by side, and some close ups of the mechanisms. From left to right I bring you - the '70 Norwood jack, the '71-'72 Norwood "Y" style jack, and the '70-'71 Van Nuys jack. The '70 Norwood base is stamped U70 and you can see the date code on the Norwood '70 mechanism on the rivit. These are in their original paint and rust. Hope this helps.

I haven't found a date on my VN jack either. The "Y" style jack has a date code stamped in the mechanism near the up/down lever.

Thought it might be time to give this thread a "bump".

Hope to do my own inventory soon & may have some data to add/questions.

Does this base look correct for a 70 bird? I remember my original being gray, but I left it at my parent's place, many years ago, and it's gone. I also have seen pics of gray ones in 70 firebirds.

Maybe someone who has one can post some pics of a gray, 70 jack assy.

Hard to tell for sure but I don't think it is correct for an A-body or F-body. It looks like one for a larger car. The mast hole in the top in your picture looks longer, front to back, than the one in my picture above in post #64. I believe that the large car jacks used a more heavy duty mast. Could be why it is grey instead of blue.

Here is a jack base from a 70 Firebird along with the lug wrench. These are from a Van Nuys car.

Here are some pictures of the jack base and lug wrench from a 70 Firebird, (photo's 1 and 2). I had read somewhere (maybe on this forum) that the correct blue color closely resembled duplicolor Chevrolet blue, part #DE1609. I bought a can and sprayed it onto the lug wrench handle and put it alongside the base with the original blue paint. As you can see from photo number 3 it is not a good match. I then tried duplicolor Ford dark blue, part #DE1606. As you can see from photo number 4 it is a pretty good match. These particular jack parts came from a 70 Firebird Van Nuys car. The jack ratchet, base and lug wrench were all the same color. However, it would not surprise me to discover that different colors were used, maybe indicating different vendors.

Thanks. Good reference material. I'm in need of one of each -- Nor. and V.N. -- so now I know what to look for. I've got one for a 68 bird that I can sell or trade.

Does anyone know if the early 70's Camaro used the same jack(s) as the Firebird?

Thanks Chris. I am a fan of Family Guy, Simpsons, and South Park. Also loved the Bugs Bunny and friends cartoons which seem to be extinct now.

I am going to bump this thread, as it might be a better option rather than the one I created a couple years ago;

Here is the thread I created a couple years ago.

I recently bought some jacks from a guy who parted many 1970's Firebirds decades ago, and these two jacks have me puzzled.

I looked and looked, and found nothing that might hint at what these jacks are sourced from.

Might anyone have suggestions on these two - or what to look for on them?

Incase it matters, the one I removed from that image is a Firebird jack dated from 1971.

Jon, believe the bottom pic you have is of a later 70's - 81 Firebird jack, have the original out of my '80 turbo SE,
-the jack mechanism on it is the same as the jack in your bottom pic, note the jack pad area is nearly horizontal, not at a 45 degree angle.

- on my '80 jack, the jack tube is square at the top & the bottom few inches are shaped like a trapezoid, to connect with its matching base. The jack tube measures 32 5/8" long.

I need to look at a few known original 76-78 Firebird jacks & confirm the date range on this style jack. have a bunch of original jacks to go through, bringing them all out & ID'ing them all is something I've been putting off.
