Default New addition to the family... 66 SC

Finally got to bring home this buddy deal on a Mordor 66 chief as a survivor cruiser for my wife. Thanks to fellow brothers Paul - PJPONTIAC for the car and Matt - Engine-Ear for some contributions as well. Its only got 54k miles was Silver but became its reality of Battleship Gray since then . Nice blue inside all Morrokide and that old smell I love ! Paul had got her driving some 5-1/2 years ago after it had been setting idle since since the early 80's or so. Seems to have been carport kept its whole life so that helps a bunch down here. Hold up 5 years ago was getting a new gas tank but that is over now and new one is one the way. Plans are to lower compression ratio to make regular fuel friendly, charge AC , upgrade bias ply 14's to radial 15" wheels black with dog dish poverty caps to get more of cop car / navy fleet car look. Also a 2.93 safe T Track upgrade in place of open 2.56 will offset the taller tires too. Paul had already done a AFB/Edlebrock 4 barrel upgrade from the two barrel and check out those original (dealer ?) metal inside rear louvers !

Got look thru the cool 66 Tiger themed owners manual and warranty book along with book of optional equipment. The stamped first year dealer maintenance and protectoplate . Glad to identify the selling local dealer ,one I was familiar with. So I went on Ebay and found me a matching Key Chain ! Bill McDavid Pontiac !

More pics with the 15"s on it and also the engine that was running very smooth and nice is super sludgy and heavy rust in coolant passages .. Its coming out to be cleaned up and lower the compression ratio to pump gas. It had very nice 160-170 psi all the way around before I tore it down. Also see the old 14" with ST205R14 trailer tires from Walmart for $37 each now on the trailer ! Check out the original Platinum Poly under the decklid . Trunk has a few small hoels but very solid otherwise. Will be repainting and epoxy some of the holes.

I may pull it to clean the heck out of it and probably pull the pan to get it all clean, or a runner 87 octane 350 Pontiac may go in for temp use

Did pull it and de sludge the inside of pan. Welded original oil pump pick up to secure. New Sealed Power 066 cam and Hylift-Johnson lifters, Engine-tech pushrods for a 400 , Cloyes steel stock new chain set. 1971 #99 400 heads inspected, valves lapped, new seals to drop her to 87 octane 8:1 1966 389 !
New Petronix 45k coil , original dizzy had Crane electronic conversion already, blocked heat risers on 66 AFB intake and the Edelbrock 750 carb I got with the car. Running good now and smokes the RR tire easily.

Much nicer than before. I assume you had the chrome rocker covers laying around, and they didn't come with the car?

yeah I had the chrome off a 67 428 from a 2+2 that sadly got parted and recycled a few years ago if you recall that thread on the Tyrol blue 3 speed manual hardtop I did. Even at 8:1 with the small valve 400 1971 heads on a STD 389 and 066 cam , it will smoke the tire real good without foot braking it.

Had not posted in a while about this car. Over the summer I got it running and driving good with cleaned up original short block I had to pull to get sludge out of pan. New 066 cam, Hylift-Johnson lifters, and new chain. 87 octane friendly 71 #99 1.96/1.66 400 heads. Dressed up engine with 67 chrome on the 750 Edelbrock carb too. Swapped in a used small aluminized dual exhaust system. Bad ass big Summit aluminum radiator , new gas tank etc.. The biggest hurdle of all was the cluster F of ending up to do a Bonded title for it and that being delayed because the junkyard that acquired and resold to my friends in 2012 had turned it in on the national database as scrap and that blocked even the Bonded title after I already had the police vehicle inspection done first. I was able to reach wrecking yard and get them to change status to sold in the database allowing me to proceed with bonded title and finally got it legal and tagged antique to me with a old TX black plate ! Still needs a heater core and AC charged and a few things. Smoothest thing to cruise on the highway at 80 mph ever !

Been a while since I posted. We cruise the old girl short trips and some longer. She was having some water temper heating up issue she would creep up even with several different hi flow Robert Shaw 160 and 180 T stats besides the $500 aluminum Summit HP radiator and the factory AC shroud and clutch fan with replaced HD clutch. Seems that the idea of a changing clutch fan came up and I put a 68 400 Firebird OEM power flex fan I had and it fixed it ! Did new door seals on front 2 doors also badly needed. During T stat games I also did the nice Flowcooler WP with blue anodized fancy impeller. Did a homemade version of a little shift kit on the TH400 and replaced the governor. She shifts pretty hard now at WOT not harsh but solid. Picked up some OEM front discs setup off a 70 Bonne to be upgraded soon. Did a 79 Z28 gearbox swap and a 1.125" Addco front sway bar with poly bushings, that is real nice, Had to swap early PS pump pressure valve to a higher pressure 70's one for GB swap. Next is to charge AC !

Hi, if you don't mind my asking, what wheels are you running and what backspacing?

I'm trying to figure out what to do with my '66 Bonneville. The 14" wheels are pretty rusty and the tires on them are dry rotted. Might as well do wheels and tires all at once, but I'm not finding any decent looking 15x6 wheels that aren't ridiculously expensive. I measured the backspacing of the stock wheels and came up with 4 5/16"... Not much out there with a 5x5 pattern and that much backspacing that I can see.

Thanks!

Thanks!
I am running 15x7 70-s C10 wheels I think but offset is aggressive to push it out towards wheel opening. At wheel lock I was getting some rub with the 235 75 15s and did the fast 79 Z28 box to also reduce turning circle thus wheel angle. The 15's could also be off a 67 2+2 I had 3 of those on my trailer and swapped the 14s off Chief to 14 inch trailer st205 tires from walmart and put those on my trailer

Larry,
how did the engine look, once taken apart???
I've seen a couple of sludge bombs that had surprisingly little wear, once taken apart...a rare deal though...great parts selection for that engine!!!

I will post here, instead of your thread, concerning your future wheel selection. Your car has a 5X5 bolt circle. Same as 1/2 ton Chevrolet/GMC pickups, AND full size GM cars, from 1971- 1976. Look for these wheels, they will all be 15 inch wheels.. I am not sure about what width's you can use, though. 6 inches wide would work fine, I'd think...
