Default TKX first drive

Completed my tkx swap on Friday. Logged over 400 miles Saturday and today
Have to say that its the best investment I’ve made since restoring this car. Fun factor is 10fold and averaged 22 mpg at average speeds of 120 kph (75mph) with 3:55 gear . I’m in love with my car again! 2200 rpm at 80,frickin awesome !!!

Great! Can you confirm you put it in your 69 GTO and no floor cutting was required? Did you use the stock bell housing? Thanks!

That's awesome. A few upgrades to these old cars can be a blast. Get that car out on the Coquihalla Highway for a blast drive. One of the nicest scenic highways I've ever been on.. Enjoy.

Yes didn’t have to cut floor other than to install shifter porch. Trans was from SST. Did have to alter floor with a hammer in one area but very minor.. car was auto, used all reproduction parts from Ames to complete install. Had to use .007 pins to correct run out for bell housing. Used a zoom 11inch clutch and driveshaft shortened 2 inches

I am glad you are happy with the results. I have been considering this swap for the Muncie in my car. Can you describe the shift feel, length of the throws, ability to shift fast with the TKX? Are the gates more similar to a modern manual trans like T5 or Getrag ? I love the compact size of this box and the claimed easy installation with minimal floor modifications. Thanks.

Have friends in Barriere and Chase . Once travel restrictions are lifted it will do many trips over the coquihalla this summer. Will be a lot cheaper than my 2014 F250 6.2

The shifts are beautiful, nice tight gates and short throws. Will shift as fast as you can. Two holes need to be drilled for crossmember. Did not experience any vibration but do get wheel hop which I didn’t have with the automatic if I launch hard

THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO MAKE A A-BODY HOOK BETTER ON LAUNCH,
without royally screwing up the ride but I would first do some driveshaft angle checks
to make sure the angles are proper. Many install trans other than the stock Muncie stuff and
then have driveline issues. Adjustable upper links can put the pinion angle right where it needs to be.

That's because the automatic "hit" is softer, dampened by the fluid in the convertor and the slippage.

Poly bushings in the upper and lower control arms will do alot for wheel hop.

When you get a chance can you post a list of all the parts you acquired for the swap?

That's exactly what no hop bars are for they work great will improve your launch and eliminate the wheel hop

I was going to ask if they had stopped producing “hop stop” bars. Had a set on my ‘72 GP. Worked like a charm.

reminds me of the late 90s when i swapped the M20 for a TKO. i also used a Hust billet plus mustang shifter and i gotta say for some unknown goldly i am so emotionally attached to it.... I know.... i'm weird...
LOVE the steep first gear.. LOVE it... LOVE it.... LOVE it.... made driving in traffic with the big cam so enjoyable, plus the quick zing when you blip the throttle.....
The OD is great on a drive, especially when you need to keep the temps down, and seriously improved MPGs, cruise speed, etc...
but... since i don't really drive much or too far i usually stay in 4th and enjoy the soothing sounds.....
If anything happens to the current TKO, i'm looking to go to a Roletk 4spd..... miss the ole H pattern shifting, not to mention so much easier at my age now to lift a smaller box and lighter instead of the heavier one. However those suckers are EXPENSIVE.....
more than likely if i ever need to pull out what i have now, i'll probably go TKX for its improvements (sort of like an insurance policy) as it would be a 1-1 swap (for the most part)
don't get me wrong, the 5spd is a good investment, but.... at the same time, i'm craving the nostalgic things of our older cars... you know.... when you jump into the seat, taken back in time, the smiles and memories.....
but... again.... that is just me.
I am really interested in the TKX with its shift improvements.... my TKO starts to get fussy after 5500, meaning, it doesn't go into 2nd or 3rd like slicing warm butter, but below that.... smooth as silk. But for its time... thats what they were. its sort of like a rev limiter light, i know by sound and the shift feel what rpm range i am in (or should say past)... hard to explain, but you will know

I bought my Lemans in October. Prior owner had a Modern Driveline TKO600 installed - it has a 2.87 first gear and Qwik Stik Shifter. The receipt from Modern Driveline says it has their "Carbon-lined" Synchro blocker ring - doesn't seem to help. When I got the car, the engine build and trans had about 300 miles on it and now has 570. Shifts are smooth under normal driving but under spirited RPM the 2-3 shift will grind.

Running a TKX behind a 5.3 in my 71 - nice piece of kit.

Using 2.93 8.5 out back so gearset is different:

Gear Ratio-Fifth 0.72
Gear Ratio-First 3.27
Gear Ratio-Fourth 1.00
Gear Ratio-Second 1.98
Gear Ratio-Third 1.34

I do not see that TKO's are being offered anymore.
