Arrow Any 1970, 71, 72 Trans Ams built with Hood Tachometers?

Throwing this question out there to others who have more knowledge and experience than I do on 1970, 71, 72 Trans Ams. Were the UPC "U85 Tachometer, Hood Mounted" aka: Hood Tachs ever available as an option on Trans Ams?

Otherwise you would end up with 2 tachs & that would be stupid looking to have a tach inside & one on the hood to.

UPC "U85 Tachometer, Hood Mounted" IS shown on this 1970 LeMans Sport & GTO order form http://www.gt-37.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=7014

Perhaps you can find it as you described above and share it with us from one of these order forms? http://www.gt-37.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=1675

Alvin, I don't know where my old book is but I remember that in my little sales book the one that use to go in my pocket, it's about 4 inchs wide by 10 inchs tall. But in there I think is where I remember seeing it last. But in my order book when you got into the gauges there was an astrist & when you went down to the bottom of the book you saw the note saying that when useing the hood tach that the in dash tach was replaced with the large clock & there would be an additional charge of ?? At least thats where I think I saw it last. I'm not 100% sure but I do remember the astrist then the note to go with. It was similar to when you got a hood tach on the A-bodies there to was a note about the speedo with the trip odometer. But thats a different subject. As I mentioned before the only hood tachs I've ever seen on an F-body has been a Formula, & now that T/A in the pic post.

I'm going to say no to the factory installed hood tach.

No mention of it in the factory assembly manual.

The hoods lower brace structure has no cut outs or features to provide clearance for the fasteners and wiring.

I have the 1970 order forms, 1970 price sheets, and 1970 Pocket Facts.

Hood tach was not available on the 1970 Firebirds, or the 1969 Trans Am's.

Cool

Thxs for the input. Seeking any verifiable Trans Am factory hood tach info like the attached "1970 Tempest Hood Tach Installation" page courtesy www.gt-37.org for 1970, 71, 72, 73 Trans Am.

I have to disagree with you when you say that no firebids came with a hood tach. As I had mentioned earlier in this post I have seen 3 formula's with hood tachs on them. The one that is here in town is owned by the original owner & he has the build sheet for his with the hood tach listed on it. Wheather there is a place in the bracing for it to come through the hood for mounting or not the hood tack was availabe on the formulas , if not the Trans Am's .

if so pix? Documentation too would be so cool.

I know a couple of 72 455 HO verts that the original owners swear were GTOs because they ordered them that way, only to find out the dealer did the magic...

Rex, yes - pls post that build sheet. If it shows a hood mounted tachometer on it the history books will need a small re-write.

Default 1970 FORMULA

from the cover of HOT ROD...most likely an early GM car...I think a hood tach looks good on a Formula hood..a T/A not so much..perfect for a Formula with out the gauge option...I am not buying 2 tachs on a car..overkill

While flipping through some 1972 Firebird literature I had in an attempt to help answer Brewster's question on what came with the Custom Trim option, I found this little gem on hood tachometers. Far from conclusive as others have pointed out that the sales literature was not gospel, but interesting nonetheless.

Hmmm, accessory catalogs are produced by the sales dept. The original intent was to add options to a plain Jane car, but they kind of expanded to try to sell anything to anyone if it would function.

Yes the yellow 70 pilot Formula was built with a hood tach, but thankfully the RPO was cancelled in regular production. I've seen no order forms, invoices, build sheets or window stickers indicating an early 70s Firebird came off the end of the line with a hood tach. Unlike a RAIV Formula I have seen no evidence that it was even theoretically available.

This ^^^^. Interesting to see the "(D)" for Dealer...slap some options on and of course the text referring to the instrument panel Tach-O-Meter standard on Trans Am...

Default FORMULA HOOD ON A TRANS AM

..forget the Formula hood and a shaker.(CHiPs) anyone?!).but when you look at that T/A and forget about the shaker & tach...if the TRANS AM had only come with the fiberglass Ram Air twin scoop hood and the stripes on top of the scoops to match the roof & deck lid like originally planned a shakerless T/A looks pretty darn cool..imagine if it had been the other way round (like the S.D. 455 FORMULA)..I think the TRANS AM would have looked sleeker and way cool (plus I would have that dual scooped hood!!)
