I have a 64 pont. catalina. I have heard of people putting higher output alternators on their cars, that they got from the local autoparts that have lifetime warr. I was wondering what will work. I have a MSD 6A ignition, dual electric fan, petronics ignitor (instead of points) and a sound system ( at night lights , plus the brake light when needed). right now i have a alternator that is like the original, difference is that the regulator is internal it puts out about 60 AMPS. I've heard o people putting on CI alternator on camaros i am wondering if it would work on the catalina. I heard that CI put out 130 up to like 150 . any help will be great. (keep me from burning another lifetime warr. alternator, plus autozone will thank U) I have seen those 80, 100 they sell but i would rather a local just incase it burns out.

If your wanting to upgrade to a high amp alt, then you might look into the single wire units that are on the market. They are simple to hook up.
Although I don't know how it will affect the volt/amp guage on the car.

You can go to the One wire alternater. However, you need the diagram or purchase the Kit from Mad enterprises and go that rout. However Air cars offered a high output Alternater around 80 anps because of all the Options it had to power.
I use a MSD with the normal Alt with no problems.
Electric fans ect. Make sure that your regulater is up to snuff. Hum, Electric fans? I never needed them. Even in the Texas heat! Always had a good 7 blade and clutch fan!

Hey Blackcat, Would I also benefit from using an A/C alternator with my 1965 389 (no A/C)? Would it just plug in and fit in the normal brackets? I am completely rebuilding it and getting new everything anyway..... Thanks!

Never hurts to have more juce on Tap! Go to the local auto parts store and get the one for an AC car. Most likely you will have to go for a 68 one as the boks seem to stop there. You start adding MSD, Stereo, Gauges, Ect. An the power is nice to have for that.

Ahem,

ALTERNATOR UPGRADE

1. Find a decent 80Amp or 100Amp GM Alternator from the U-Pull-it. Hey get 3 of these internal regulator alternators while you are there. Also get as much of the 2-wire harness that you can.

2. Remove the old alternator, and the Mechanical Regulator from the firewall.

3. Unravel the 4 Reg box wires from the engine harness..One will be brown and go to the firewall/dash light.

4. Splice the Brown Firewall/dash wire to the Alternator R harness wire.

5. Splice the F Alternator harness wire to the Windshield wiper wire colored Black w/Yellow stripe. That is Switched-12Volts. This way your Alternator won't drain the battery while the car is off.

6. Solder the 2 splices and neatly wrap the harness work for best results.
