Over the last 26 years, I've only seen one '69 428HO Auto w/3.90 gears. It was a local one owner car and I spoke with the gentleman several times through the 80's. It was gold out and gold in as I remember. Havent seen that car in years.

I have seen a couple of decent 428 HO 4 spd GPs in the last two decades, but a 428 HO auto...I can't even fathom that. That would be sweet no doubt.

I've owned one 69 428HO 4-spd (black, black vinyl top, tan interior), junked one 69 428HO 4-spd (3.55 rear end, car was in primer), owned one 69 428HO automatic (the green/green car at POCI in Greenville SC), and junked one 69 428HO auto with a XG motor. I also have one complete XG motor that I was told came out of a 69 GP.

They are rare, but they're out there and often overlooked.

Mike, youve certainly come across some rare '69 GP's! I've been wanting to start a registry for the '69 428HO 4-speed cars to see how many are still out there. Hey, you wouldnt by chance still have the original distributor from the 428HO 4-speed car that you parted out would you? Thats the one item that was swapped out on my car years ago that I wish I could find! I've owned several '69 GP's over the years since 1980 and bought my first HO car in Oregon in 1995. It was Nocturne Blue, black top with black leather interior auto (XG). It was a nice original car and well optioned. I had always wanted the HO 4-speed car and now finally have one as of Jan this year. Thanks for sharing your info!

I'm not sure what all I have left. I was still living near Charlotte when I stripped the HO 4-spd car, so it's been close to twenty years ago. Incidentally, it had a SR 428 block with 48 heads. I still have the block, but I've removed all of the internals. If I remember on my next trip down, I can look around for the distributor.

There is a rare car locally I missed. It's a 428HO 3-spd Model J with drum brakes. I mentioned it before and someone got excited, but the owner has no interest in selling it. It is an oddity.

Thanks Mike, I appreciate you checking into that distributor for me. That SR block is certainly something to hang on to!

That 428HO 3-speed GP IS something to get excited about!!! Only 3 of those were built. I would love to speak with the owner and see the PHS on that car to document it. Is the owner near you?

Yes, he live near me. I mentioned it once before and another guy wanted to contact the owner. I talked with the owner, and asked him if he wanted to sell it. He said he didn't and didn't want people knowing where hte car is.

I'm not in the acquiring mode any more, so if he decides to sell I'll post it here.

I'll relay the info to him. As far as I know, he doesn't use the computer so he would contact you by phone.

I just barely missed buying the car myself about five or six years ago.

Wow...Mike ! Quite the the GP's you have had in your hands. Any of those cars still around or now retired ?
Wondering if you would have interest in selling the XG motor you got ?

Grant : It would be neat to see the PHS on that 3 speed car. That is one very unique car to be sure...but still not the same as a 4 gear car !

Mike/Grant : Any of those cars have PHS factory 3.90 rear gear ?

I don't know what gear the 3-spd car has in it. I've never seen a PHS on it.

My black SJ 4-spd is in Indianna or Illinois last time I heard. The owner wanted it very badly, so it's unlikely he ever sold it. He's had it for about ten years now, and I heard from him a couple of years ago. He still had the car then. When he bought my car, he also had a 455 4-spd car. The 428 HO car had a 3.55 posi.

The primered SJ 428HO 4-spd I junked also had a 3.55 posi rear. The car was very rough and wasn't worth saving at the time.

The green/green 428HO automatic was at the 2005 POCI convention in Greenville SC. The current owner lives nearby.

The other 69 SJ HO automatic car was junked in the early 80s. I don't think I have anything left from that car at all, but I hauled it to the scrap yard. It had rusted badly under the vinyl top, which ruined the quarters and trunk pan as well. I bought it for the motor, but then found out the 428 wouldn't bolt into my 73 Formula. That car had a 3.23 posi. That car is still in use.

The XG motor I have was removed from a 69 SJ and installed in a 70 Firebird by the previous owner who was living in CA at the time. I bought the Firebird about six or seven years ago after he moved to NC. The engine has been rebuilt and has fairly low miles. It might be for sale, but it wouldn't be cheap. I was planning to stick it in a 72 Lemans convertible, but never got around to it.

I also junked out a very rusty green/green 370 HP 428 4-spd car that was loaded with options. About the only thing left from that engine is the block and heads. It was also very rusty in the rear end.

I just picked up a yellow 69 GP model J 428 automatic. It's also very rusty around the vinyl top. It will be parted.

I like 4-bolt main engines.

Mike, thanks for relaying my contact info to the owner. I hope to hear from him, that would be great!

My car has the wide ratio 4-speed (M20) with the 3.55 rear gear as well. There were only 22 (M21) close-ratio 4-speed '69 GP's with 3.90 gears. Anyone have or know of one of those???

I never followed up on it, but about ten year to twelve years ago I saw a white 69 GP 4-spd in SC that was supposed to have the 428HO 4-spd with 3.90 gears. It was a Model J and looked stock. The guy who showed me the car said it had the big exhaust manifolds and a 3.90 gear, which I couldn't verify. It was sitting in the yard, so I could verify it was a 4-spd and didn't have a/c. Very few southern GPs were built w/o a/c, so I assume it probably was a HO car.

I left my number with the owner's wife, but I never heard from him. Since it was about four hours away from home, I never went back to check on it.

That is the only 3.90 geared car I'm aware of.

Could very well have been one. The only one that I know of was the car Pontiac used in their performance brochure and performance poster. It was Expresso Brown, Brown top and Gold leather interior. There was another 21 of them, but I've never heard of or seen another.

Hey Grant, Can you post a pix of your car. I would love to see it !

Talked to guy about 3 years ago at Pontiac show in Michigan. He said had a 69 SJ HO close ratio 4 speed with factory 3.90 gears. I asked and inquire more of itas far as sale . But he was wishing to restore it. It did say iwas badly rusted.
I think it was Limelight green with white guts if I recall. Called once to see if for sale...but nope.

My SJ is Verd. green with black roof and black interior. 428 HO auto with 3.90's and no real options of luxury . Just steering, brakes, rally gauges w/ in-dash tach and AM-FM Stereo and all tinted glass.

Mike do you have a HO car now ?

Dave
