quarters
Can those quarter panels be saved? They look great except for the surface rust.. .How do you get rid of that so it won't come back? (I'm not a body guy).
Thanks

Here's a story on the totaled Judge.
In 75 I had my 70 Judge and saw this beautiful 71 Judge at a car lot. (4 speed black interior) I told them I would be back the next day with the cash. Saleman said OK. I return next day. No Judge? Maybe they're cleaning it up for me? Find the saleman, and his jaw dropped. He said some other saleman just sold it and didn't know about our agreement. So, a couple days later I saw it. A guy I worked with at the time had bought it. I told him, I was buying that. If he ever sold it let me know. Anyway, couple days later he totals it. Then Doug's story takes over.

Well Doc, your typing skill has dramatically improved since you joined the Forum (lol).
But, I am wondering if the heads and exh mans he rolled up with were from the totalled 4spd Judge, or the originals from the Auto Judge ? The one you bought looked to be in one piece under the hood. So you got extra sets with it ? Or ? $500 in 1978 - My Fukkn AZZ ! D@MN ! I could have swung that money and was only 15 then !!! Tail Lights and front filler panel - New repops probably the way to go. Hood and Deck - I might let go - But don't wait around on me if something else comes your way first. JT's - I know it says JT on buildsheet - but there have been descrepencies found on that matter. What code rims were on it with the flat tires - check date stamps - and contact ol'pinion about this if needed. Front valance ? |

I've got the interior stripped out of it, I wanted to get the dash sent off somewhere, I'll do that the later part of this week. I think I can restore everything else by the time it gets back.
I'd have the front end off and the drivetrain out and the body just sitting on the frame, if I didn't already have my red '70 on my hoist. I did all that with it the last 2 nights(found out it has the wrong tranny, now I need 2 '70 automatics ). The engine out of the '71 will be at the machine shop Friday though, I guarantee.I'll note all the date codes on engine parts and post them here, I hope the tranny is correct in it.... Someone asked about the quarters...I have a booth set up at my shop for alluminum oxide blasting, that is how the entire car will be stripped, it will blast the pores of the metal without warping it(if I'm careful). Baron, I think the wheels that were on it are KU, I'll check today, just figured they were wrong according to the build sheet.....DW

Either JT or KU wheels would be correct, depending on the build date of the car. Ol' Pinion has stated that some cars with JT on the build sheet were built with KUs during a transistional period in the fall/winter of 1970-71.

I'm willing to bet a few beers those KU's are original to the Car.
:: Patina looked consistant. :: Most swappers/upgraders go for 15x7 or 14x7. :: Still had faded/aged red center caps intact. :: Stainless capped lug nuts intact. Check the date codes on them and let us know. Refer to last weeks thread about JT wheels for sample pictures to decipher date codes if you need any help. I'm not fully polished on 71's. "Think" trim rings might be standard/right for 71 without any wheel options selected. Believe they had 3-4 wheel options on 71 Judge. Last edited by Baron Von Zeppelin; 07-04-2007 at 04:30 PM. |

Baron the date code on the wheels is 2/13/71...their off his brothers car, the totalled judge, or something else. He said my car had mags on it when he bought it, and didn't remember where the wheels on it came from.....DW

I owe a few beers now. Thanks for checking, too.
Most of us can only muster a blasting cabinet. Doc has a Blasting Booth ! How cool is that. Rock on, Doc. |

Steve, Why don't you find me a rust free decklid and hood for this '71, and a set of correct dated wheels and I'll come down this weekend and get em. I wasn't planning on coming, but if I had a good reason.
The slots are going on my '57 Chevy 2dr hdtp that I drove in High school(they're just like the ones I had on it back in the day). I hope to have it done for my 30th reunion, gives me 3 years for that project. I've been busy this week, taken 2 and a half judges completely apart. Looks like a bomb went off in my shop. The '71 is the half apart one. The engine will come out tonight as well as the body off the frame.....DW

Rust free will be most difficult, decklid the easiest. I bet the hood might be near impossible these days. I can take you down to the secret junkyard, but no promises anything good will be found.

Far as I know they are the same, but I have heard tell the 71-72 front ends are most difficult to find now. Seems odd to me because they were certainly available nearly everywhere back in the 80's, I routinely passed them up for lack of what to do with them.

FYI, I have it from a reliable source that the '71 and '72 hoods are slightly different. I'd never heard this until recently, and since I've never owned a '71 I had no way of knowing.
On the '72 hoods, there are a couple of slight "notches" stamped into the metal (just under the leading edge of the hood) to allow easier access to raise the hood after it's been popped open. My source tells me that the OEM '71 hoods were not stamped with these finger "notches".

Your source is right on the notches. The hood on my 71 didn't have the "hand notches" but the 72 hood that I had years ago did have them. |

After they mentioned the size and types of snakes around there, I spent alot of time outside the barn. That was a long day, so long that I didn't have a celebratory beer until the next day..off to pull an engine....DW
