455 build - Looking for cam suggestions
Rebuilt 455 +0.30, 6X-8 heads with mild porting, stock crank, stock rods polished with ARP studs, forged flat top pistons, reproduction RAIII manifolds with 2.5" Pypes exhaust with X and street pro's. Rotating assembly is balanced. Had Ultradyne 280/288 cam, but needs replacing. 1969 GTO, M20, 3.55's and 26" tire. Might lower ratio with 28" tire and/or change gears down the road. Weekend street cruiser.
Want good low and mid power and "lopey" idle. Engine builder is suggesting Bullett 163268. Suggestions? Tim

-What did you want for with the UD cam you had?
(provide full specs of previous cam) -Can your heads accommodate the lift of the cam your builder suggested? .... that's a lot of lift for iron street heads, -Are your heads set up to make good use of that much lift? -Rocker ratio? -Are heads shaved heavy to gain compression? -Block decked? -Final actual CR calculated your working with? |

A HFT with .458" lobe lift? Seems like a misprint to me. 218° @ .050" is really small for a 455. It's certainly not going to lope either, if that's what you're looking for. It will have a smooth idle, and be all low end torque.

Here is the listing for Bullet Racing HFT lobes:
http://www.bulletcams.com/Masters/Hlobes.htm Nothing even close. But like Comp Cams they might not list all the lobes available in their inventory. Bullet also has the UltraDyne masters but in that listing there is also nothing close. .

Get this one and have them grind it with a 110 or 108lsa which they will do at no additional cost.
http://lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=3211&gid=289 Here is that cam in a 462 but with a 112lsa so 108 would be even lopier and 110 a little less. If you like the sound of this car go with the 112. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHLshwwe-Tc There is a thread on this car lower down in this section of the forum and it has a 3.55 gear like your car. In the thread there are some videos of the car being driven. |

Just bump up to the UD 288/296 on what ever LS you want. The 296/304 I have might be a bit much for you CR.

At .050 lift, that cam looks similar to an 041, such as the Crower 60919, as well as the Howard's 410051-14. Anybody have any dyno or strip testing comparing any of these ?

61-63, I'm thinking your cam might be a little larger that I need.

A little background about my build....
Car currently has original 400 (350 hp). Due to the high compression, getting the "right" gas is a PITA as well as the cost per gallon. This engine has torker I with q-jet. I'm assuming cam is stock and not sure if the engine was ever torn down. With the torker I, this engine is a turd at low speeds. I picked up a 1969 factory intake, but never installed it. I'm now building a low compression motor that runs on 91 octane no-lead and will pull this engine to enjoy later. 455 build. Got this gem 10 years ago and now getting around to installing it. I briefly heard it run right before i bought it and knew nothing else about it. Was hoping to drop it right in and drive. That's where it all changed. I /took the engine to local engine shop to install new rear seal assuming it could leak after sitting all these years.. During tear down, lots of issues were found. Now I'm getting a full rebuild. I was planning to re-use the UD 280/288, but it's well worn and recommended I change it. I could get the same one again, but want to get the best fit since going new. Here's the specs for the 280/288 (duration = 221/230 @ 0.50, lift = .463/.485, Lobe = 110). CR is around 9 to 1 with the 6X-8's. I'm looking for good low to mid power for street. Not planning to run RPM's much over 5K. Keeping the Q-jet for now, but looking at EFI upgrade down the road (like the idea of easy start and low exhaust smell. Better economy too!), Oh yeah, one more curve. Yesterday, the engine builder suggested going with a hydraulic roller over a hydraulic flat tappet. His reasoning is possibility of lobe(s) going bad on the HFT cam. Not trying to start any arguments, just looking for best fit. Tim

Two more items to consider.
Car has power brakes and hidden headlights, both requiring vacuum. Not sure if these matter with any cams that fit my needs.

The UD has shorter seat duration and assymetrical lobes so potentially a little better idle that the longer seat duration 041. I have used that cam in 455 and 400, Lee here used one in his old first gen 455 with good success.
Even on a 108 mine ran power brakes and A/C fine.
