Locked out Timing on Race Gas/Nitrous?
Last winter I switched my bracket car over to E-85 and I absolutely love it. The car did pick up a fair bit going to E-85 and switching over from the Northwind to a ported RPM.
With that said, we have a 1/8 mile heads up Wally race here in the near future. I certainly don't have enough car for small tire but there is a limited size tire (LST) class and my 27-10-15 Hoosier QTP's are legal. For the day, I would like to take off the E-85 carb and install my old 830 DP and likely my NOS Powershot plate (125HP) to either activate on a WOT or button on the shifter. I don't want to go through the hassle of changing over the ignition from the locked out Pertronix. Since I'm going to retard the timing a bit, I think I'll be okay with the locked out timing, right? I'm running a 12v system with a gear reduction starter (forgot the brand) and I have a on/off ignition switch.

When running nitrous you want to know what the timing is at all times. If it is changing and you pull timing you don't know where you ended up.
Why were you considering running without the timing locked out?

Keep it locked out but keep in mind you should be pulling out about 2 degrees of timing for every 50-HP of nitrous added to start with a safe buffer.
When I ran nitrous in my 11:1 467 with iron heads, I used VP C-16 fuel to make sure I had enough octane, and I pulled out 2 degrees of timing for every 50-HP nitrous. I ran a proprietary fuel system just for the nitrous system and made sure it had 6.5-psi and my bottle pressure was 1000-psi when staged. I used an MSD retard box in conjunction with my MSD-6 to ensure I had full timing at launch or when not on the nitrous, and I wired the nitrous to a WOT switch. This allowed me to stage the car with full timing (typically 32-34 degrees) and pull out whatever I needed as soon as I hit WOT. This provided for consistent launches. If you're going to be serious about this event, bring extra bottles and a bottle warmer with you that allows you to immerse the bottles in warm water and keep an eye on them with gauges.

Thank you for the replies Gentlemen. I did run nitrous (2 stages) for heads up (hard tire) racing but that series folded a couple of years ago. For whatever reason, I never had the best of luck with ignition boxes. For the better part of the last decade, I've been using a Pertronix Ignitor III mech advance distributor. I had it set so all timing was in by 2800 rpm. I went to a locked out ignition (same distributor) when I changed over to E-85. I just old school it and pull out the timing light for racing with or w/o nitrous.
