Default 2nd gen Trans Am shaker clearance

I’m looking for air filter ideas for a 2nd gen TA with high ports, a Victor, and a dominator. My 70 TA has a fiberglass hood with the shaker molded in, but it looks damn near impossible to get any type of air filter assembly on it. I’m thinking I either need to go with a new hood and taller shaker or have some crazy air box fabricated for it.

I can’t be the first one trying to tackle this issue

It’s hard to get a good picture but I’m attaching a couple

The Moroso 65803 dominator cap nearly fits but just catches on the front slope of the shaker scoop. I figured this would be a good starting point to figure out what I can do.

Found this by glasstek but it’s taller than I’d like. Has anyone tried this scoop?

Poncho Perfection magazine, volume 2, number 8, August 2016 has a T/A on the cover that used that scoop. It has an air filter that sticks up inside the scoop.

Message Don Keefe and he can probably get you a back issue and put you in contact with the car owner (Chris Carrato).

FWIW,
Eric

High ports add and extra 3/4" height vs E head/iron head. Going to be a tight fit with the Victor. A KRE Northwind intake drops about 1" off a Victor.

Ken had his Dude Scoop the I think Dave N at F Body Pro Touring is replicating but not sure it will get you enough clearance either.

Thanks for the input guys!

I really like my current hood set-up so I think I’m going to give the Northwind a try. It doesn’t look like it will give up too much over the Victor. Who knows it may even pick up a little or stay the same if I have some mild port work done.

According to this it’s a 1.203” difference (Victor 10.825” vs Northwind 9.622) which is significant. It will also give me more options for a spacer or possibly a nitrous plate.

Thanks. I will do this. The larger scoop may end up being great upgrade later. Plus it’s always cool to read about Pontiac stuff

I have a shaker hood scoop molded onto my fiberglass hood. From a distance going down the road it looks somewhat factory:

https://www.motortrend.com/features/...b-e1f7e9e5685c

My air cleaner assembly goes up inside the hood scoop. With a HP950 carb I used a Victor intake with a K&N 9-inch diameter filter that was 2.875" tall and with it the 9-inch diameter X-stream filter top. In addition I had the Victor intake carb flange milled down 0.650" for extra clearance. On my 505 dyno testing indicated the milled intake gave up about 8-10 HP at peak power rpm. With 660 HP I was not worried about the loss ! For track use, just remove the air cleaner.
Butler has done the same on a 535 combo on a Victor intake for use on a functioning shaker assembly, it gave up about 15 hp on the dyno.

This all said, I run Edelbrock cylinder heads. Not the taller HP heads.

(Since then I have converted to direct port fuel injection. With the throttle body in place of the carb the air cleaner assy still goes up inside the scoop.

Here are my measurements from the fronat and rear valley pan seal of the block. on the first dimensions. Second set to a flat valley pan right at the carb pad.
Northwind 7 5/16 / 7 3/8 Carb pad 7 3/16 / 7 3/16
Victor 8 9/16" / 8 9/16" Carb pad 8 1/2 / 8 1/2"

So about 1 1/4"

I got a Northwind 4500 form Butler a few months ago but had to wait a month or two for it to get to them. My IA/Camaro with a 3" cowl with E heads and a Victor is close with a 4150 but I can get a drop base air filter on it. Not sure it would with a Dominator and for sure with High Ports and Victor.

Can you post some info regarding your fuel injection set-up? Btw - I love how you did your interior and cage. I’ll be switching mine from black back to the original deluxe bright blue. Best looking interior color IMO.

Steve 2.18x1.18 basically a FelPro gasket size. The top of the port looks touched by a CNC to get it even . Port dividers in the plenum are pretty sharp from the mill making the cloverleaf as well as sharp into the top of the runners vs a Victor Dominator.

Here are plenum pictures. One good thing is the throttle cable bosses are taller than the Victor so should be a straighter line without having to add spacers like I did on my Victor

Big thank you to JC for offering a ported Northwind. Great looking intake. Unfortunately it was just too big for my stock size heads.

I saw this at a local Pontiac car show today. Nice looking 1973 TA. It is hard to see but I think it is a northwind. It had an EFI throttlebody. Everything looked to fit great with the shaker.

Not sure this is of any use to you, but it help me when trying to get a bit more room in the shaker. The filters taper toward the top. (Conical shape) https://www.airaid.com/concept

I have a 2nd gen Z28 (BBC) with a Dominator & a Victor, and a N20 plate (no shaker). I recently changed the hood (so I could actually see around the monstrosity Harwood aero scoop) to a 4" cowl, and used a Moroso drop base (which has the largest drop available) and found that Butler sells this tapered filter assembly specifically for the shakers. You can also buy the element from them separately instead of the whole $250 assembly. Might get you going in the right direction using those parts with a little custom fab work.

Just a quick update. I ordered a 4500 Northwind from KRE last month. I heard from Jeff earlier this week that they are expecting them to arrive in the next week or two. If you need one it may be a good time to order.
