64 GTO hood scoops install
Did GM use a seal / putty used to keep water from going between the scoops & the hood ? Concerned about water sitting / getting between the scoops / hood & pad . Just finished the re-paint ready to install . thanks

Memory?
Been many many years ago but I sure remember pulling 64 scoops off and seeing a thin white caulk material all flattened out stuck around the perimeter of the scoop.

they used putty. I think I may have a couple 64 hoods here that the scoops haven't been out of before I'll check and post a picture.

Yeah, they use dum-dum or body schutz or whatever they called it. Not sufficeint for a seal but enough to make a good fit between the unflexiable hood scoop, and the flexible hood.

According to the assembly manual GM actually had LH and RH part numbers for the seal(s) on the assembly line.
Those seals were never offered as a service part as far as I know of. I would say 3M strip caulk would work just fine today.

The original seals had some sort of thin string inside the sealing material for reinforcement, I pulled a set off of one of my '64 GTO hoods that had never been taken apart and found this out.

That sounds like the same type material they used for the water shields behind the door panels, also gray with a string in it. I don't know a source for the gray stuff.

Strip caulk from 3M is perfect for this seal. The originals I've seen have a similar caulking material on them that's dark gray.

Found a inexpensive product made by Frost king P14H 3/16" grey 30' long no string got it local worked great .

Don't over tighten the mounting nuts! Just a light touch on them as they are small and if over tightened can damage the scoops themselves. The sealer also helps keep them properly attached to the car.
