Tom,
I agree- it's not anything new, just not done that much because most people building Pontiacs want to build 400's, 455's and 461's. I built a 326 with KRE's for probably similar reasons you are building that 301 stroker- because no one else has (at least not that I've heard of). I also like the idea of making hp with less cubes, but still getting some of that abundant torque Pontiacs are known for.

Went to Joes this morning, called Nunzi from his place to be sure we were on the right track. Will post a few bad pics of the area that had to be ground to fit the 326 into the block. Also the 400 thrust bearing fit in the block showing the space where the bearing shim will go.Joe has not split the shim yet.The block is going to the machine shop now to be bored and squared.Cam bearings and freeze plugs.Tom

Tom,

This build has my wheels turning also...

Question, doesn't the 326 crank have 3.0" mains? Doesn't the 301 crank use 2.50" mains, so the 301 block main bores should be 2.688-2.689? How can you fit a 326 crank in your 301 block without either grinding the crank 0.5" or opening the 301 main bores to 3" ( 3.188-3.189)?

My appologies if I missed something.

Thanks,
Bryan

Well, that explains it...

P-Dude, you need to correct your "Crank ID Chart".

Hey Tom. If I missed it, what was your final bore size and did you sonic it to see what thicknesses you see? I've heard so many different things about the Turbo 301's having thick and thin walls. Glad you're doing this, except now the price on 301 turbo blocks will likely go up, LOL. Mark L

Mark,we did not sonic, not sure what we ended up with. They were just doing the min necessary.Joe was not concerned as the wall where you could see looked thick.I believe where the concern is with the main webs.I did a short fill and Putin solid main dowels.Trying to do as cheap as possible and see how it goes.Tom

Just a note on the intake fabrication. We looked at the 301T block idea for a sprint boat engine a while back

Intake of choice was a Victor and we intended to section it through the plenum (end to end) to remove the additional "height". Didnt get as far as deciding on a 4500 or 4150 flange but initally it looks like the 4500 would have got the nod

Its a pretty common way to do it on SBC here when running their "short deck blocks (very Short !!!)

The advantage they see in doing it this way is porting access when its split, plenum is easier to access / weld grind than 8 indivual ports to flange junction, transition work at the plenum / runner entry was probably going to be done anyway. (and easier to hide the modification )

The Victor Pontiac would also alloe for the runners to be shortned or reshaped in the plenum which isnt a bad thing

Just wondering if this way wouldhave worked well with the intake used in this thread ??

You really need to address Dave as he picked the intake and the way to do as cheap as possible. This was always a street build and to try and keep the expense down. The plan was to build a 383 CI 425ish HP pump gas(91)drivable in summer bumper to bumper traffic. The cam is actually more than Joe thought we needed, flo was more than we needed but the cam was in my drawer from a earller build and Dave did not have a CNC program les than 260 CFM.Tom
