Pink Firebird
I wonder if any of you guys/gals have ever seen anything like this. A gentleman contacted me at our indoor show year before last. He found this Firebird and intended to make a hot rod out of it. But when he bought it and looked at the trim tag he decided to try and decipher what, exactly, he had. He has run the PHS on it (he claims) and the car shows to be a west coast zone office order. What he wants to know is who the original owner was and how they had enough juice to get a special order paint in pink. Would any of you have any ideas on where he might get some help?

I read in Hot Rod magazine in 1968 that Pontiac made a pink special order Firebird for Nancy Sinatra, this could be a it. It was the issue that reviewed the 68 GTO Car of the year award and the endura bumper. It was mentioned that the author of the article saw it sitting at Pontiac headquarters awaiting delivery to Nancy Sinatra as the came to pick up the 68 GTO for the road test. Being there is lead time for magazine articles this would seem to fit the time line and be at the tail end of the 67 model year run.
One of the lines I remember from the article is "Some day Pontiac will relent and again become part of General Motors". At that particular point in time Pontiac was still the maverick division and being run by "car guys" that seemed to take delight in finding ways to market cars that were outside of GM corporate policies and rules, the good old days. Jim Wangers may have more insight to the details about this car.

There was some speculation in the Hemming's Motor News forums that it was built for Nancy Sinatra but no confirmation. He's seeking someone with real, verifiable information regarding this car.
I won't lie, the trim tag looks a little bogus to me but I'm no expert. Stranger things have happened with Pontiac.

The car sitting back in the garage in the photo appears to be a convertible, but it's hard to tell for sure.

I have to agree. I see no post and what appears to be a reflection where the driver side mirror would be.

Playboy give away car?
From wikipedia: Lisa Baker (born March 19, 1944 in Detroit, Texas) was Playboy 's Playmate of the Month for its November 1966 issue, and Playmate of the Year for 1967. Her original pictorial for photographed by William Figge and Ed DeLong. She was also able to get some work on television, on The Jonathan Winters Show and as the Budweiser girl on the Tonight Show. She posed nude for the December 1979 Playboy pictorial "Playmates Forever!" Texas is close enough to make me wonder.

It say's in the sinatra article that her car was sitting in HER garage... Of course she could have drove the firebird to the set and parked it in a garage.

Point made.
Scratch the Playmate angle. Lisa Baker, playmate of the year for 1968, took a Barracuda. Struck out there. http://jalopnik.com/5536844/playmate...-1964-to-2010/

There was one in Florida several years ago - raised the same speculation - that one was a rotted out roach if I remember correctly.

Unless I'm reading this wrong, Pink Mist appeared for 1968, and supposedly a Pink Mist car was built for Nancy Sinatra in 1968.
But isn't this guy's pink Firebird a 67?

Pink Mist appeared in 1968 because Nancy's car was painted that special color in 1967, I think.
Her car was made for her TV special in 1967 also.

this subject has been talked about many times over. you could order any pontiac made in 1968 in pink. i believe to get a pink gto you had to get a chrome bumper car however. there were numerous ones here in tulsa back in the day and there are still a few sitting around that people wont sell. i posted pics of a catalina in a carport about a year ago or so in another thread here on py. just because they are pink doesnt mean they were a mary kay, playboy playmate or anything else, just a special order color.

I've seen a number of pink first gen Birds turn up over the years. A lot less common than Verdoro green, for sure, but they're out there.

Quote:
Interesting that 2 recurring themes keep coming up: Mary Kay and Playboy. Here what I wrote before: A quick search turned up what cars were given to Playmate of the Year. No GM cars in 67-69: 1967 – Lisa Baker – Plymouth Barracuda fastback 273V8 1968 – Angela Dorian – AMC AMX 290V8, AT 1969 – Connie Kreski – Shelby GT-500 fastback 428 Cobra Jet MaryKay pink cars started in 69, according to their website. From JohnZ (author of the Assembly Process Article and who worked at LOR): > We built at least two pink '68 Firebird convertibles at Lordstown for DeLorean to give to Nancy Sinatra when they were dating; pink paint, pink leather, pink tops, pink everything. > She wrecked the first one and we built a second one to replace it. |
