Joe, did your friend ever find out information on this steering box? I have a 1978 Pontiac Grand Am that has this steering box. However, I have checked in the parts books (Pontiac 1977-1981) and that number is not listed anywhere. Nor is the pitman arm #7828464 SMT12A! I am the third owner of the car. I bought it two years ago. I must say, the car does handle well!

These numbers are worthless. You can't ID a steering box's original usage for spit. There's a Julian date stamped into the top of the cover, but that only tells you how old it is. There's a two-letter code ink-stamped on the end cap, but it washes off after a few years in the rain and snow.
