Default Cleaning engine/Sealing Intake

Hello all,

I got the intake off today. Before reinstalling, I would like to clean the engine and repaint it. I have two questions:

What should be used to block off the intake holes to keep out degreaser and water as I'm cleaning? Is regular green tape sufficient?

How would you recommending 1)cleaning the engine 2) prepping for paint in this situation? There is a bit of rust in the valley between the water pump and block. I have ordered some hi-temp engine primer from Eastwood that I plan to coat the new aluminum intake before painting it. My process would be to degrease the engine well using brushes to scrub, and then wire wheel the rust areas, then scuff the existing paint and paint over it once cleaned again?

Any other words of wisdom from experienced users I should know before starting?

Well it's too late now, but if the car was drivable be fore you yanked Intake and there is a out door car wash near you then I would have gone there, sprayed the motor down with oven cleaner, waited 20 minutes and then washed the motor off real good and done that again if need be.

Once all is cleaned off (the oven cleaner will strip off old paint) and before you repaint the heads and Intake you want to prime the heads Exh ports and the Intake crossover area with high temp silver header paint and the once fully dry ( atleast 4 hours ) apply your color coat.

As Tom mentioned, clean the intake surface area of the head with brakeclean or similar, then use duct tape to seal. Should work well unless you get really carried away with the pressure washer

X2 on the oven cleaner. Get the Heavy Duty Easy Off in the yellow can. Best off the shelf engine cleaner around. It does work better on a warm engine but will still work well if you give it 15~20 minutes.
Masking tape doesn't stick really well once water gets under any edge. I think the aluminum duct tape would be much better.

Thanks for the tips everyone. What brand oven cleaner?

Does the duct tape leave a reside that needs to be removed with razor blades or anything like that?

Thanks,
Brandon

Any residue could be wiped off with a little mineral spirits, acetone or anything like that.

By the way while things are apart and you have easy access to them, how are those rubber fuel line jumpers on the pump doing?

Is it new type hose that can take today's 10% cut fuel?

FWIW - I have had good luck with ‘Gorilla Tape’ for use in areas that will be exposed to moisture. It’s a bit thicker than typical duct tape, too.

Oven cleaner will take off the paint, if that's what you want to do (and you'll have to be really careful to keep it off the body and chassis). From the picture it doesn't look all that bad...I'd probably stick with engine cleaner or just a solvent to remove grease and dirt. That area in between the water pump and the block can be tricky to clean and de-rust without removing the timing cover.

Just an FYI. Stick with regular, fabric duct tape and don't use the aluminum foil tape that is also referred to as duct tape. The adhesive is activated by heat (for better duct seal). If you are working in full sun, it can get hot enough to activate the adhesive and believe me, getting it off is a real project.
