Cool video. The Gray Ghost is my favorite Trans Am race car of all time. Saw it race at MIS back in the day.

I would presume the Grey Ghost had a RA4 top end and the Tirebird maybe a 5 top end ?

Thanks for the great video. Gray Ghost for the win!!!! Made up allot of ground on the last half lap with Pontiac Power. Never thought he would catch up. On the final straight, you just knew the Javelin would not be able to hold off the Pontiac. Love it. The announcers were pretty terrible. No mention whatsoever about Pontiac power, anything about the car really. They said it was famous, but nothing about why? They had plenty to say about the 18th place Camaro, 47 seconds behind, and all the rest of the Chevy, Ford, and Chrysler back markers. All they said about the Tire Bird was it had brush strokes in the lettering. Thanks again for posting.

I was wondering if the race was 'set up' .Its nice to see the Gray Ghost win. The 303,wonder if it was/is the short deck ?

From memory, the Gray Ghost ran towards the end of the '71 season with a tall deck 303. The main reason this was allowed was that the SCCA allowed dry sumps in '71. Probably for Penske/Donohoe Javelins which were eating engines due to oiling. The 303s have two oil pumps--stock pump is a scavenging pump and a second pump was added behind the cam which is the pressure pump.

The short deck 303 was attempted for the first races of the '70 season, but SCCA DQ'ed because of homologation. So a de-stroked 400 was run the rest of the season with disastrous results.

The "junk yard" Trans Am was prepared for the '72 season.

Generally for the races the 303 entered, it did quite well. Perhaps two or three DNFs over the 10-ish races the Adams' team entered.

**I am looking for documentation on the dry sump tank of the JY TA.

I suspect it was on the passenger floor, near the firewall for a few reasons:
1. Batteries had to be visible from the engine compartment in '70; so teams built a recessed box.
2. Batteries could be back in the trunk in '71. But that recessed box was there and a good spot for a newly allowed tank. Penske's is visible in pictures.
3. '71 SCCA rules specified that the tank had to be sealed from the driver; hot oil is not too fun.

Anyway, I would appreciate any thought you have.
