1971 LeMans 3660 # without me. Fully dressed. Drive it as far as 100 miles at a time. No overheating.

455, stock crank & rods, TRW piston 80# pump. This lower end has been running since 1986. Starting to use a little oil though.

Comp P296AH-8 cam, 246/253 @ 050 566/572 lift with scorpion 1.65 rockers. Comp. Hi-Tech 5/16 9.250 pushrods.

6X#4 heads ported by SD Perf. to mid 260`s at 550.

T-2 intake with a Pro System 1000HP.

Mallory unilite re-curved to 36 @ 2300, no vacumn advance. MSD 6AL box set to 5600, MSD super conductor wires and NGK UR5 plugs.

Hooker super comp headers with 3 inch exhaust all the way to the back with 3 chamber flowmaster muffler.

All stock components are still there except a/c.

T-400 trans with modded governor, Trans Go stage 2 kit, Continental 10 inch converter.

12 bolt with stock posi running 3.55 gear. MT ET street 275/60/15 tire.

This car ran 12.21 @ 110.8 just the way it sits. 1.70`s 60`s Closed exhaust. Ran 12.24 @ 110 with a 1.80 60` also.
Needs a decent fuel system though and i`ll be putting one shortly.

Changes will be a new engine with e-heads and roller cam to make more power and higher vacumn than this engine.

As the pics show, this is no race car.

Thumbs up Cheap 400 build for 87 octane.....

Here's a low-compression 400 that I put together on the cheap.

I started with a 1969 400 engine that came standard in the Grand Prix that year, this one had around 90K miles on it. This one suffered the same fate as many others with the factory nylon upper timing chain sprocket. The teeth came off the sprocket and the next thing that happened was the valves started hitting the pistons, bending nearly all the pushrods. Beside maybe a couple of slightly bent valves, the rest of the engine was in great shape.

1969 400 block, still std. bore as the cylinders had almost no wear ridge, this engine must have had some decent care during its life. I reused the original pistons and put some new std. iron rings on them. Pistons sit about .020" down in the hole like most factory 400 engines of that era. The original rods were reused with new std. bearings, they checked out good. Same thing with the original 400 crank, new std. bearings installed and factory balance job retained.

1976 factory baffled oil pan with HO Racing trap door mod to retain oil pressure on hard right turns. Melling M54DS oil pump, pickup retained with a 10-32 screw through the pump housing and tube and loctited in place, HO Racing hardened oil pump driveshaft. Stock filter adapter with bypass blocked off using a 3/8 pipe plug.

1976 6X-4 350 92-94cc heads, no milling or porting/port matching. Rocker studs were replaced with 7/16" big-block Chevy studs and stock Chevy self-locking crimp nuts were used to set the valves. Stock valve springs were reused as well as the retainers and keepers. 1976 valve covers with the drippers were used to help keep the rockers lubed.

Compression works out to 8.2:1, I put the original #62 high-compression heads off to the side.

Edelbrock Performer cam (204/214 @ .050, .420"/.442", same as Summit 2800 cam) was used with stock 1.5 stamped rockers and stock pushrods. Cloyes Tru-Roller timing chain, cam installed straight-up.

1972 factory iron Q-jet intake and a 1972 455 750 Q-jet were used, the exhaust crossover was not blocked off. Topped off with a stock 1970 GTO twin-snorkel aircleaner.

Stock log exhaust manifolds with the outlet ID opened up from 1.900" to 2.100" to match up to the ID of the 2-1/4" headpipes. Full 2-1/2" mandrel-bent exhaust with H-crossover, Walker Dynomax 17749 20" long Super Turbo mufflers.

TH400 trans with Trans-Go shift kit and stock converter, stock 3.23 open rear and 235/75-15 (28" tall) whitewall radials. Engine resides in a 1969 Grand Prix, weighing 4100# w/o driver.

Best ET 15.11 @ 92.7 MPH, launching fairly easy to keep traction. Not bad for low-compression 400 running nearly all stock pieces, easily a high-14s car with any decent traction tire. I was getting 13 MPG with this car running at 80 MPH on the freeway with the A/C blowing ice.

An honest 270 HP 400 built strictly for commuting, runs hard on 87 octane.

Thumbs up

Great thread!

This is the engine in my Formula, best pass in my sig below. Car is fairly loaded with A/C, P/S, PDB, P/W, etc. Everything works, BTW.

Pump gas 467" HO engine:

1970 "XF" code 455 block, 4.200" bore, zero decked
103 "N" crank, .010/.010, stock stroke
Eagle 6.625" H-beam rods
Custom ordered JE pistons, 10cc dome, 9.98:1 calculated CR, 215 PSI cranking pressure
Sealed power rings, FM bearings
Melling 60 PSI RA IV oil pump and driveshaft
7F6 '72 HO heads, ported to 276 Int / 176 Exh @ .550" lift @ 28" by Dan Barton of Westside Machine here in Houston
Bullet Cams solid flat-tappet camshaft, 232/235 @ .050", 144/145 @ .200", 538"/.555" net lift
Crower lifters, HS 1.65 (1.73) roller rockers, Comp 9.300" moly pushrods
Stock unported '72 HO aluminum intake
17084910 455SD SR Q-Jet, tuned by myself
Mallory Comp 140 fuel pump, Mallory return-style regulator, 1/2" feed and 3/8" return lines, BG pre-pump fuel filter
NOS OEM Pontiac point distributor w/ a "Breakerless SE" electronic conversion, custom re-curved by Rocky Rotella
R.A.R.E. 2.45" outlet SD exhaust manifolds
PYPES 2.5" mandrel-bent X-pipe exhaust system
Tom Hand prototype single transverse muffler
'69 TH400, rebuilt and upgraded by Circle D transmissions, 12.5" 8625982 GM "L88" converter, 2800 RPM flash
Moser 12-bolt diff, Eaton super duty posi, 3.42 gears
15x8 repop Rally II's, P255/60 fronts and P275/60 (28" tall) MT drag radials
"Race" weight of 3950#

Engine dyno netted 430 CBHP @ 5100 and 530 CBTQ @ 3000.

Idles with just a bit of a "rump" @ 850 RPM in gear with 14-15" of vacuum, and the torque will flat tear your head off!

Sealed Power Rings (hand fitted)
Eagle 6.800" forged steel H Beam Rods (stock 6.625")

Comp Cams XE274H Cam (replaced an 068 that I had put in around 1990)
Adv Dur 274/286 Dur@ .050" 230/236 Lift .488"/.491" LSA 110
Crower lifters (manufactured by Topline Hylift/Johnson for Crower)

Stainless Steel Ferrea Valves 2.11" Intake and 1.77" exhaust
995 Springs
Three angle valve job

67 HO Manifolds Ported by Ram Air Restorations to 2.41" and gasket matched
(replaced original 66 "log" manifolds)
2 1/2" PY Pypes mandrel bent aluminized dual exhaust system (no X pipe)
2 1/2" Dynomax Super Turbo 20" mufflers

700R4 trans 1st gear: 3.06, 2nd gear: 1.63, 3rd gear: 1.00, 4th gear: 0.70
Hughes 22-25L Lockup Converter (2,200 - 2,500)
3.23 "open" rear end (WAY TOO MUCH wheelspin...3.23 posi to be installed)
Tires: BF Goodrich Radial TAs (regular street) 225/70R14 (26.5")

Overkill for a street car that will probably never see the dragstrip again? Maybe it is, but it sure will be fun for the next few decades! I really do need to get the posi installed as the biggest problem is wheelspin! I just barely (and I mean barely!) get into the outside carbs and it's all wheelspin at most surface street speeds.

Here's a link to some pictures of the build.

Enjoy! Jim

69 GTO, 455, 4-spd.

71 455 HO block with 4-bolt mains 0-decked and bored 40 over. 85 cc KRE heads, gasket matched to RPM intake, otherwise heads out of the box. Crower 60919 cam (231/240), with Scorpion 1.65 roller rockers. Compression ratio yields 10.4 to 1.

Doug's headers...3" exhaust with X-crossover to 3" Xlerator mufflers, then 2.5" tailpipes out the back.

Q-jet reworked by Cliff Ruggles, using 3/4" modified spacer. MSD distributer (initial 12 degrees, 30 total). MSD blaster coil and 6AL box. Adding a 2-Step box for better launch rpm control. Fuel line...1/2" tapped into the tank right to the carb (modified inlet to accept 1/2 " line). Fuel pump...McRobb mechanical...pressure set to 6 lbs.

Trans...Liberty-built Chrysler iron case A-833 Hemi 4-spd (2.65 1st gear). New steel drive shaft 1350 U-joints at both ends. Driveshaft loop.

Diff...Chev 12 bolt, Eaton posi, Yukon 33 spline axles, 3.42 gears on 275/60/15 M/T Drag Radials. 11" drum brakes

Only had the car out to track once. 12.80 @109. No tuning or tweaking. Was having some clutch/launching issues which have since been sorted out. Can't wait to try it again. Thinking if I can get out the hole at full power and power shift, she might be down into low 12s. I'm hoping.

Great to see what others are running
Mike

Default 66 Full-sized combos

#1 - 66 GP A/C

96 heads (9.5:1)
744 (RA III) cam
Pertronix IgnitorII
3.42 safe-T-Trac
TH400 w/ street/strip kit

Good stoplight car. Too much RPM for long open road w/ 3k @ 68 MPH but have done 3000 Mi. straight. Nice lumpy idle w/ enough vacuum for power, auto & A/C.

#2 66 Bonneville wagon w/ A/C
389 030 over
AFB 4bbl 4034S
092 heads (10.5:1) w/ stainless valves, hardened seats etc.
Speedpro pistons

2.73 Safe-T-Trac - ballanced Driveshaft
TH400 w/ street/strip & adj. modulator
1 1/8" front sway bar, 7/8" rear = bulldozer handling
8 lugs

Excellent road combo. Unlimited top-end, nice low-end power. Great sound. 3.08 would make it the ultimate road warrior you could still afford to gas up for a 1000 mile trip.
