Car needs a few things to be legal for 9.99, but not much. And I'll need to do the driver licensing process. |

Do you have any pictures of the engine in the car? I’m curious how a gutsram fits with highports in a 2nd gen
My Victor and highports are a very tight fit under the glass hood

Not very easily. I run a VFN 6" Cowl hood. The front carb is the problem as the hood curves downward rapidly just in front of the front carb so am forced to use small dia air filter. I had to find a very short KN air filter and made special base plate that allow the small dia air filter to sit as low as possible. On the plenum top I milled 1/2" off the carb mount pads to gain more room but that was negated by the 1/2" sideways-to-inline carb adapters I added. I like the simplicity of the linkage when the dual carbs are mounted frontways/inline. I don't have a pic handy right now but air filter selection is very restricted due to how high everything is; even with a 6" cowl hood

meanwhile; 1.5 years later.....
It was April 2022 when my new hi-port combo made its 1st pass down the track running a 10.17 @ 134.63. Being excited at getting relatively close to a 9 I pulled my exhaust system off thinking I would gain enough mph to get me a 10th or two but I didnt hook as well on that 2cnd run and only ran a 10.5x @ exactly 135.00 ... not much mph gain at all.
That 1st outing was on well worn and aged Nitto 555 275/60r15 and i was sure I was going to come out with some new 9 x 28 Phoenix bias ply slicks and get that 9 in 2 to 3 outings at most. How wrong I could have been. In November 2022 I got as close as 10.01 on the slicks .....then spent the warmer days out in the 10.teens 20s and 30s with mph down 3 to 4 mph... I put Viking Crusader DA shocks front and rear and that changed the car quite a bit and not for the better at 1st. I've gone back to a radial street tire running MT ET Street R tires and a combo of good air good track and possbly finding the right shock settings and air pressure and its running 10.0xs pretty consistently. It ran its 1st 9 on a Saturday morning 2 weeks ago at 10am with -500ft DA air .. then same day last pass at 8 pm with a 360ft DA it ran a 10.00. Also ran a 9.96 that day. MPH on all the runs were 136.xx So to summarize it took me 1.5 years to go from 10.17 to 9.94 ... and it wasn't for a lack of trying ... haven't counted the outings and number of times up to bat but its a lot. I got the 9 just in time before my track that I drive to just 10 miles away is closing. Last edited by RBAILEY; 11-06-2023 at 07:03 PM. |

That seems about normal. Congratulations! Nice job. If it was easy everyone would be doing it.

Having the hood so close to the carb can disrupt the airflow and may be holding you back some. Try running it with your hood off and no air cleaner, if it picks up you might want to get a different hood with a higher hood scoop and run a larger air cleaner or no air cleaner at all. Air cleaners are overrated anyhow, I have ran my drag car without an air cleaner for many years and it hasn't hurt it at all. It's more important for the street but in my opinion not important at the track.
